During her junior year of college, she did a "semester abroad" thing in Niger. She "worked" in some sort of maternity ward hospital. She actually put this on her resume like it was a job she held.

I think that was around 2007, and around that time, the progressive darling was "microfinance" AKA "microloans". Nitwit saw the beginnings of that dipshittery in Niger, and she fell madly in love with it. I read an article in which AOC claimed that that was the catalyst that spurred her to switch her major from science to economics. Sounds like bullshit to me. More likely the STEM classes she was in kicked her ass freshman year, and the African school vacation gave her the bright idea to switch to some easier shit.
The theory behind "microloans" was you'd give out lots of little (like $1000) loans to dirt-squatting bug eaters in shithole countries, and the poors would use those loans to start small businesses and set up mom and pop shops. That would in turn stimulate the local economy, and the money would come rolling in, and the loans would be repaid, and the profits would all be shared and distributed evenly, and there'd be cleaner dirt to squat on, and more delicious bugs to eat... progressive utopia!
That's the theory. In application... not so much. Microloans stimulated a little bit of business, and they generated an assload of debt.
The microloan fad came, did it's damage, and went. It's pretty much a forgotten wreck that was thrown up on the mountainous scrap heap of failed progressive ideas.
I'll bet if you asked Hyphen-Nitwit, the Microfinance Practitioner, about microloans today, I'll guarantee you she'd tell you that they're fabulous things, and we should load cargo ships up with US taxpayer money, ship it to shitholes, and throw around microloan money like confetti.
