I’m going to wait until his next performance until saying he’s completely done. It could have possibly just been nerves, anxiety, or fear, having a mental block can really make anyone look brutal... reference most of Conor McGregor’s opponents, Aldo, Alvarez, Cerrone, guys who are used to being in main event fights, but looked uncharacteristically lost in the cage. Usually a drop off due to age is more gradual, his fight with Souza where he looked great was only 18 months ago. On a positive note, he was able to take some big shots from Akhmedov who’s 8 UFC wins are half by KO/TKO. That in itself is a good takeaway from the performance the other night, obviously not the getting blasted in the head repeatedly part....LoL. His wrestling still seems on point, and does his top control. His gas tank was never great, getting his body worked early and going 10 months between fights, plus neck surgery earlier this year probably contributed to his shit conditioning... Maybe I’m being optimistic and definitely performing mental gymnastics to rationalize how he could’ve looked so poor without been completely done. The Chris has always come across as a good dude and solid family man... I’d hate to see his livelihood prematurely taken, besides who doesn’t appreciate a good redemption story about a veteran who hits a wall of adversity and beats the odds. Guys who were on the downside and put it together for that brief period to achieve the ultimate goal...Robbie Lawler first comes to mind, as does RDA who was a good fighter that fit in the journeyman catagory. RDA had a 20-7 record and never looked like a world beater before putting it all together for a brief period and won the LW title. While I highly doubt that Weidman has enough time or gas in the tank to face the monsters in the top 5 needed to make another title run, I’m hoping that he’s able to pull it together and at least go out on a positive note, not being the victim of Highlight reel KO’s as his last few loses have showcased.
