This is an issue on your end with content board render.

Try clearing cache and restarting browser but also ensuring you're not running (sometimes redundant) content-block browser extensions like the full AdGuard suite; these will readily corrupt on-board embeds and interactivity as such.

I have tried my usual (medium-high) security browser setup, and minimum security, with everything wiped, on my desktop and laptop, and a public computer and in every case I see the ginger cat and black square. With minimum security there's no AdGuard or similar.

You must be using an (i)OS version older than 14.2 from what I’ve read. There’s an invisible Unicode character called a joiner that renders more complex emojis (like above cat) but wasn’t implemented until said version. Android users can experience something similar when Unicode fails to compound multi-asset emojis.

Can you check and update your operating systems, then try again?

My desktop and laptop OSes are up to date and in order. The public computer won't let me see whether or not its OS is up to date, although it seems likely that it is. It also appears to be in order.

It would be relevant for you to test and tell me if the emoji also doesn’t render (i.e., join) in your word processor programme – Pages, Word – or on another site like Reddit what have you.

Because the emoji works fine for me, this issue should be reproducible on your side elsewhere.

I copy and pasted the ginger cat and black square into the latest version of Libre Office Writer, and it still displayed as a ginger cat and black square.

Yes, so this confirms the issue is not local to our board software but user individual settings and/or config beyond the scope of the site.

As a workaround, I thought you could have this: a transparent cat I've named Lil Sumo you can drop in any post you like.
