Television The Bear (FX)

Rewatched the whole series in anticipation for 3. It's just so fucking good. Reminds me of MR. INBETWEEN, the other best show of the era, in terms of the immaculate quality & short episode lengths. And the two series also have in common there is no fat in any of the episodes to cut out, no wasted time. Like literally, zero. It's almost as if...

If you guys like this show you should watch boiling point.

There's a movie and a series. Both are really good. Possibly better than the bear
Boiling point is quality. Movie and series. I like how they both have similar set ups bit both feel distinct.

Finished watching season 3's first 3 episodes. So stressful. Need a break from this frustrating feeling and the self-sabotaging antics of Carmy. Will continue watching tomorrow.

I hope season 3 lives up to expectations because seasons 1 and 2 combined were one of the best thing I've seen on television. Just brilliant all around.

I may just wait another 5 weeks or so in order to binge the whole series.

Just finished season 3 today. Not quite as good as seasons 1 and 2 but still great!

So far season 3 is not living up to expectations.

On episode 5 season 1. Love J.A.W. but series is a little slow. Even after drinking a few and a couple of blunts..

I felt there was too much yelling from every going on. Still enjoyed the show but it's my least favorite of the three seasons. I enjoy any episode with, Donna, Jamie Lee Curtis. She makes it emotional for me and for me, way too much Fak time.

Compared to the first 2 seasons, it was a bit of a letdown. Felt like a downer this entire season. Still like to see where it ends up. Not sure how many seasons are planned, but I think 4 or 5 are enough to wrap it up. But damn, this season was frustrating.

I'm only halfway through this season but it's been days since I watched an episode and I don't have the same desire to keep watching like i did the first 2 seasons.

I feel like the show is losing me. Hopefully they wrap it up with one more season because it's just getting repetitive at this point and hard to watch.

I feel ya.

I used to bartend and on weekends I was always the corner with the drink orders for the waiters because no one else could make the drinks fast enough. And I still had around 6 seats of the bar which would be 5 deep at times.

I remember times where I would turn around to make some annoying muddled time sucking drinks like mojitos and the slips would print out all the way to the ground for table orders.

I can still hear that sound of the printer.

yeah when i worked in a kitchen more than one of my colleagues had the same 'endless printout from the printer that never stops printing' nightmare

Man, this season was a letdown. Overall it lacked the focus of the first two seasons and portraying the struggle the characters and the business had. Now it kinda feels like they're manufacturing situations. "Oh, Carmy wants to change the menu every night. Fuck you, no Fuck you, NO FUCK YOU".

Initially it felt like the season would be about getting the place to turn a profit, but even that seemed to fade into the background and they put personal stories at the forefront. Thats not necessarily bad, but there's a couple problems.

Number 1, I'm getting real tired of Sydneys entitlement complex. Her character is talented, but is having amazing opportunities just thrown at her and it isn't really explained why. Yeah, she's talented but talented chefs aren't rare. She's getting a partnership just given to her by Carmy, who's pumping all the money his bro left him into the business, has been mentored by some of the best chefs in the world and Sydney is basically all "I don't like your tone". Fuck, bitch, he's GIVING you a partnership in one of the cities best restaurants for FREE.

Then some other random dude is like "Hey, Sydney here's another flat out amazing opportunity that I'll just throw into your lap that you've done nothing to earn".

Basically, she needs to go fuck herself.

Ok, rant off. But there's other issues too. Going with personal drama stories over the intensity of the kitchen can work, but it doesn't here. I don't care about the chef Carmy trained under going out of business. That should be something thats used to create tension in his own restaurant, not devote a whole episode to....what, exactly? All the chefs having a meal together? Who cares. The show has only introduced like 4 of these people, and even then it's rather sparse.

And then, holy shit, you build up Carmy meeting the A-hole chef again for 3 season and then thats all that happens? He cries about his ulcers? Give me a break.

There's just all this character drama, which is fine, but it's like they forgot the other half of the show. Richie and his ex, sugar having a whole episode talking to her mom. Ok, but where the other half of the show?

And don't even get me started and the cliffhanger ending. It's like they set up a dozen questions and decided to answer none of them.

It probably comes off like I hated the season, but I didn't. Its still a quality show because of the talent involved. But, man, this was a letdown when you compare it to the previous two seasons.

Oliver Platt is still a boss, though.

SE 3 Ep 1 was probably in my top 3 of the series. But everything after was ok, but not to the standard they set in SE: 1 & 2.

Just finished season 3, thought some of the music sounded familiar and turns out Trent Reznor & Attitcus Ross's fingerprints were all over it.

The Faks crack me up.

I watched Season 1, but felt the story was finished, so never watched past that. Felt like anything more would just be the network trying to cash in.

Also, the woman walking out on that rush would never be rehired in 99.5% of kitchens across the USA, so it hurt my disbelief.

Lastly, that shit pasta sauce recipe. What sort of notable culinary specialist couldn't figure that out, a middle schooler? Basic AF and worthless. Gida's marinara would kill it next to that crap.

(Not that there is anything wrong with Giada's recipe ... it's actually really solid).

It is good tv but the stuff outside of the kitchen wasn’t that interesting so stopped at episode 4.

1000% agree with what you said. Many episodes brought up little things and they went nowhere or they pushed aside the interesting side stories for something else. Syd feels forced as character as she's being treated like an elite free agent chef but she can't put her foot down either. Too much Faks, it felt like they got more screen time than everyone outside of Carm.

Bring on more Jon Bernthal flashbacks, his appearance in the Tina episode was nicely done. Also Platt kills the role, id like to see more of him.

Good call. The episode with Bernthal was a high point of the season. That was a great way to do a character focused episode.

Easily the best episode of the season. Ayo Edibiri directed that episode, too.

Like everyone else, I found the season a bit of a letdown.

The acting carries the show, and agreed, Oliver Platt has been magnificent. He and Bernthal were the best.

Although it wasn't my favorite experience, it's impossible not to admire the acting in the birthing episode. Jamie Lee Curtis again delivered. Give the lady an Emmy.

Every season has 1 episode that blows you away, with a setpiece kinda vibe. In season 1, it was the one-shot chaos episode in the back half. In season 2, it was the family Christmas episode in the back half. Here in season 3, it was the very first episode. Pretty ballsy to make your best episode the premiere, I kinda dig it. As I understand it, elements beyond the creator had the studio asking them to stretch one season over two. So I get why the pacing was weird this year. I'm still in Love with the show, so not gonna complain too much. This was however, the first season that had any filler. Any moments where I might have looked at my phone for a minute. That never happened in 1 & 2, wherein I was TV screen glued. That said, it wasn't just fat, plenty of meat on the bone this season too. And on a steak this good, even the fat is tasty. I still can't wait for the next season, & will definitely rewatch this one at some point. It leaves me with a fond feeling, especially that premiere. Special series.
