Television The Anime and Manga Thread: v45

I'm too attached to the original Japanese voice actors, they just feel like the characters. Inspector Lunge's deep, super even tone. Johan's super soft but believable high pitch, which in the dub just seems - coincidentally - cartoonish. I also hate the way they 'Americanized' Tenma, & dumbed down a lot of his dialogue. He needs to be a super polite super smart Japanese guy

These are just opinions though, for sure

The cool thing is, it seems some great samaritan has recently put up both in their entirety on the youtubes, so people can decide for themselves

subbed:

dubbed:

(This shit used to be so hard to find lol, what a time we are living in)

Having heard it with the original voices, there's no way I cold use subs now. That wouldn't be my show.

Yeah, the English dub voice for Inspector Lunge is particularly egregious. He just kinda sounds like... some random guy. Fuck that. He needs to sound like near-Darth Vader. I mean, just look at that face.

Currently about a third of the way into a complete series rewatch of MONSTER (2004). I rewatch it every handful of years or so, my 2nd favorite anime of all time. My God, it's so fucking good. Ages like wine.

Anyone who hasn't seen it, try to track down a subtitles version, it's far superior. The dub is poorly voiced & translated

@Loiosh
Monster is a masterwork! I have to rewatch it at some point.

@Loiosh
One of the few anime that MIGHT just might work well in a live action adaptation. All of the mangaka's work is awesome. 20th century boys has to be up there as one of the greatest manga of all time. Needs an anime adaptation, all of his work does.

Did anyone else who watch Re:Zero get really annoyed with season 2? Emilia just finished the first trial and I am not bored but SO annoyed with how slow the story feels now.

It's genius, strong recommend. Thanks again to Petey for putting me on to this.

I watched with subtitles but heard the dub was award-winning.

Opinions are deeply divided, there are some pretty nuanced arguments from both sides.
There are literally only three anime I would recommend the dub over the OG Japanese voice actors.

Cowboy Bebop
Samurai Champloo
Black Lagoon

The first two cause Blum is great in his roles. Black Lagoon it just makes more sense in the universe for everyone to be speaking English instead of Japanese. Seeing a Russain mob boss speak fluent Japanese in southeast Asia with her gang and then go to Japan and need a Japanese translator for Japanese while speaking to the main character in Japanese is a huge mind fuck.

for me, it's these 2 and dbz (for english dubs).

i never heard the black lagoon dub, though.

and i thought monster was absurdly over-rated and actually pretty crappy. gave it a serious try but bailed after 15-20 episodes, iirc (after asking if it gets better).

Yea I enjoyed the second half but I was seriously considering dropping it after that first half.
I like that they who how Geuce lost his fucking mind and how Emilia meets Puck and shit BUT HOLY HELL is it drawn out.

The accents are better. The only characters I think are better in Japanese are the twins Hansel and Gretel and that’s cause of how high and sing song lyric sounding their lines are in Japanese.

Yea it was to drawn out. The shows has done this before here and there but it was never nearly this bad. I always felt like there was a good pay off as well. That first half of season 2 didn't give me any of that.

Like, where I’m at they’ve spent three episodes with Garf, Emilia doing the trial and Subaru talking to Roswaal…

3 whole episodes! I may have screwed myself too by watching the directors edition of season 1 where all the episodes were an hour long

@JBSchroeds

Northern Blade , one Theory Discussed a lot was the Central Heavenly Alliance being behind the Silent Night the whole time. Turns out that the Twin Headed Asura was another contingency of their control, they never accounted for the Northen Heavenly Sect Becoming so powerful to thwart that plan. Also I believe the Night Lords of the Silent Night probably don't realize they are Pawns and only the top leader is aware of such.

MC's old friend's argument against Mu Won is stupid to me , Mu Won has never gone out of his way to ruthlessly slaughter an unsuspecting tribe.

Mu Won's morality makes him feel guilty for the blood shed but he didn't initiate any of it , he is simply surviving at an expert level.

Well it's been about 5 months time to catch up on Tower of God.

Last episode of Demon Slayer has to be in the top 5 best "animated" episodes ever. I mean it's no surprise as we've seen the crazy animation at the end of season 1, but this one was something else.

Yea I was thinking the same thing last episode. Beautiful animation. Wont make the mistake of watching this show before the season ends again though. There is nothing worse than watching an anime that extends a good fight over 5-6 episodes and you have to wait every week for it. It ruins the whole experience.

demon slayer seemed completely uninteresting to me (at best), but the more i hear about it seemingly literally everywhere, the more i guess i gotta give it a chance.

is the plot at least ok? i saw some fight scenes and thought it looked fucking retarded.

Be prepared for disappointment. IMO this Cat-Tower arc has been the weakest of the series.

The plot IMO is good. It's not amazing. It's not something that's never been done before but it's a good overall plot. Some fights are better than others. The only one I didn't really like involved a demon that beats a drum and changes the orientation of the room. Thought that one was boring.

that's one of the 2 that i saw. lolz.
