for a more accurate depiction of how fighting an armed insurgency should go, look at the USMC Small Wars Manual from the Banana Wars w/ Chesty Puller and the ilk....
Pretty much became the Hamlet strategy the Marines wanted in Vietnam, Westmoreland veto'd that shit quickly, but the Marines were allowed to operate a smaller sized campaign based off that strategy called the CAP or Combined Action Platoon program.
marines lived w/ Vietcong, in the villages, worked together, tc... became a part of the community. Prior to the Tet Offensive, when the CAPs became mobilizied ( and thus negating the entire premise of it and why it works). Even with that, they experienced a general Kill/Death Ratio of I think 12:1 (it was 20:1 before mobilization I believe), crazy high arms/munitions/equipment captures, etc.... Furthermore, villages actually warned of NVA/insurgent presence, actually helping the Marines to fight back and maintain their own villages....
Great plan, too bad it wasn't implemented fully
