The All-Encompassing Vitamin D Thread

Thought this was interesting...

I've never been a dedicated FitDay user, but I had some spare time today and decided to log everything I ate in detail (as much as possible, I estimated to the best of my ability with things like meat serving sizes; I think I got pretty close).

Anyway, at this point, most my nutrient levels are "in the green," (at lest 100% RDA, for whatever that's worth), and I still have 1 meal left to go. Note that these numbers do not include any of my supplements. The nutrients that are not over 100% at the moment are:

Vitamin E: 78%-Somewhat surprised by this, considering how much fruit/veggies I ate.
Potassium: 89%-This will be over 100% by bed.
Thiamin: 98%-Same.
Vitamin D: 25%!?!?!?![/B]

Wow, I had no idea I was doing that poorly in the "D" department. Like I said earlier in this thread, I have very little sun exposure during Michigan winters as well. When I go outside, I don't leave any skin exposed.

This came during a day when I have so far consumed 2,600 calories (non-workout day), a 39/37/23 FAT/PRO/CHO macronutrient breakdown (that will shift more toward fat/protein with my last meal), ate fruit and/or veggies with every meal, and ate a wide variety of food. In other words, what would normally be considered a pretty solid diet.

So, yeah, definitely starting 2x1000 I.U. D softgels a day.

Fuck! haha

What worries me is that if you are only getting 25% then I'm sure mine is probably worse!.
I'm glad this thread came up, I put in an order yesterday for vit D, it'll be interesting to see what happens. I'm going to have a look at Fitday and calculate where I'm up to nutrition wise.

Animal Pharm: Physiologic Benefits and Actions of Vitamin D: SEX AND SURVIVAL

Check it--->"Did you know that Vitamin D supplementation normalizes estrogen and testosterone (via aromatase)? In men with low testosterone, supplementation can modulate and raise blood testosterone. In women, the same, with estrogen."

Lots to read, but this chick knows her vitamin D inside-out. No wonder Robb Wolf speaks so highly of her.

So...I'm going not going to get the flu and I'm going to be jacked?

Anyone have any particular brand of Vitamin D supp they like? Preferably on the cheap side.

Nature Made has 1000 I.U. D softgels, and from what I've read, we should be taking softgels, not tabs.

It is a theory that has been around for a very long time. Some call it Hope-Simpson's 'seasonal stimulus'.
Never been proven, only a theory. There are many other theories as to why influenza spreads during this season, we stay indoors longer, closer with relatives, holiday season.... a ton of ideas. Nothing proven tho. Get your flu shot, and I guess take the vitamins... Or just go outside in the sun.
The biggest trouble with the theory, why does the equator not have 2 flu seasons per year? They are short on sun 2 times a year....

How different is supplemental VitD from the one you get from sun?

as you get older your body reduces its ability to absorb the vit d from the sun, plus too much sun increases skin cancer risk and aging on the skin.

This has been a good thread to read and thanks again Vedic for raising the topic. I'm thinking about following Josh's idea of taking 4,000 units per day and seeing if I notice any changes. I've actually gotten my first cold in 3 years at the moment and I also experienced depression for the 1st time in my life within the past 4/5 months. I'm generally feeling better now but the depression came from nowhere, didn't see it coming. Do you guys think that part of what happened to me could have been to do with a Vit D deficiency? , or am I putting too much emphasis on this issue. Of course, I know that taking a Vit D supplement won't help with serotonin production but the Vit D would likely help me fight colds and similar now and in future.

*wishes he lived in a sunnier place than England*

dude all you need is 1,000-2,000 from pill i believe, why overdose on vitamin d? thats kinda scary

Check out the link that Mike posted. It says a naked fair skinned person can absorb something like 20,000IU of vitamin D from the sun in 30 minutes!
I'm not saying to pop 20,000IU of vit D, but I think 1000 or 2000IU is the very minimum we should be supplementing per day.
Great thread! Thanks for the link Mike.

thats crazy though that much iu in 30 minutes damn lol

I can't help but get a bit concerned about getting my D. I don't supplement with it, beyond what's in my multi, and this time of year in Michigan, if I am outside, I am covered head to toe. I don't supplement D right now, except for 200IU/day from my multi.

just my opinion and i know many will disagree but...

multi vitamins are shit don't waste your time, just buy the vitamin D3 and supp with that,

the reason i dont take multis is cause the ratio is never perfect on the label, it might say 200iu of D but sometimes you only get 50iu that is potent. plus their is wayyy to many vitamins in that small ass pill to have enough of each one.

multis are great for kids though.

I basically just get most of my nutrition from foods, and i take fish oil, vit d, probiotics, garlic pills, b complex, vitamin c, and NAC.

also its all about timing, dont take all of them at once....some people take all their vitamins for breakfast thats a bad move cause certain vitamins compete for absorbtion and your body can only digest so much at one time. spread your vitamins through out the day and search which ones are best to take together.

Dynamo, your knowledge of multivitamins seems to come from the dark ages. You really need to update it, and take into consideration advances in potency and enteric coating that make them sustained-release for maximum absorption through the intestinal tract (as opposed to the stomach where much potency is lost on account of stomach acids).

No one-a-day is worth anything, true. Multivitamin capsules are subject to stomach acid degradation of the vitamin content, absolutely. But most two-a-day enteric coated tablets both contain very good amounts of vitamins, and optimize absorption.

P.S. - There's no such thing as a perfect label ratio.

well i agree with the enteric coating especially on oils like fish, garlic, and also probiotics.

I have tried the two a days and all it did was make me piss highlight yellow all day and made me nauseated.

but wouldn't you suggest just taking separate vitamins instead of a multi?

I know that certain vitamins counter others and thats why a multi to me is BS, cause it tries to get everything cover in one small pill which is not possible.

I take my NAC by itself with vitamin C inbetween meals. Because Magnesium counteracts the benefit of NAC... I think consumers need to be more aware of the science and timing of vitamins instead of being drawn into what the local vitaminworld guy is trying to sell them.

Taking them with food usually stops this.

No.

This is irrelevant. Foods contain many vitamins that when put side-by-side "counter" each other. Yet you promote eating food as opposed to taking a blended supplement. There's more to biology and biochemistry than the small picture. If your point were true, then the methanol contained in your precious oranges would surely kill you.

Also, I don't now anything that mixes NAC with Magnesium, so that as well is a moot point.

So you approve of taking multis?

I mean would you recommend that its a staple even though plenty of news articles suggest that multi vitamins are useless?
