The All-Encompassing Vitamin D Thread

What tests are you using to determine that you don't have hypercalcemia? Are you taking vitamin k2 as well? Soft tissue calcification is not something one should dismiss based on mere speculation.

  • Well, for starters, I'm not taking in an insane amount; I take 10,000iu a day. If I was (for whatever reason) taking 5 or 10 times that dose, then I might run into problems.
  • Secondly, my 25(OH)D came back at 73ng/mL. Since that's right in the optimal range, and I'm clearly not overdosing, hypercalcemia can't be present. I also plan on re-checking the 25(OH)D on 6 month intervals.
  • Thirdly, I don't have a family history of hyperparathyroidism, which would put me at a greater risk.
  • Fourthly, I'm not, nor have I ever, exhibited signs of hypercalcemia secondary to hypervitaminosis D, like nausea, decreased appetite, muscle cramping, etc etc.
As far as supplementing with K2, no, I do not, nor do I plan to. I regularly incorporate spinach, broccoli, cauliflower, eggs, meat and cheese, so I see no point.

While this was a study done in the elderly, it is interesting in the fact strength was gained over the non-supplemented group.

It's been seen with younger people as well. I remember one study specifically with teenage women (I think, memory isn't always the best). Vit D deficiency does affect power output across the board, young and old. The other studies might even be in this thread somewhere. It's too damn long for me to look :icon_chee

I don't think this has been posted; if it has, please point it out:

TMUSCLE.com | "D" is for Doping

I read through it twice, convinced I was missing the plug for some shight supplement from Biowhore. I'm just waking up from a nightshift, so it could still very well be there.

Also ordered myself another Vitamin D test kit from Grassroots Health; last test came in at 73ng/mL in March, so I'll be curious to see what it's at after a summer's worth of sun and sporadic/lower doses of supplemental D3.

Mike, isn't it time to get your 25-hydroxy vitamin D levels tested again? Curious...

hey mike, why do you take that dosage? has it been trial and error, research, or what?

I'm trying to find an optimal dosage for myself and would appreciate some advice. Thanks.

My dose is based upon recommendation and trail and error; Cannell recommends 1000iu per 25lbs body weight, which would put me right around 7000iu a day. Prior to my 25(OH)D test, I was slowly upping my intake until i hit 10,000iu a day; my initial test came back at 73ng/mL, which is perfect.

Since then, I've hovered between 10,000 and 5,000iu, depending on my sun exposure. I've also switch up brands, which may or may not affect bioavailability.

Once I have a second test done, I'll have a better idea of an exact dose, for me. I don't recall which link it was in, but dose response is a very individual thing. Where 4000iu may be enough for one person, it may require 8000iu for another person to acheive the same 25 (OH)D levels.

Are you participating in their twice a year survey?

I checked out their "sample questionnaire, this was one of the sample responses:

Currently pregnant? Yes

If yes, expected date of delivery? 11/09

(so far, seems normal...and then..!!)

Currently breastfeeding? Yes

If yes, age of child: 11 (!!!)

Exclamation marks added for emphasis.

Anyways, what kind of feedback to they give you after you send in your test, if any?

Initially, I just did the survey and ordered a one-time kit. I just did another survey (A long-assed one, too. But whatever), and I have a feeling they'll be collecting data prior to every test.

No feedback; I received my results via email. I'm assuming they are collecting data on health/lifestyle choices and correlating them to 25(OH)D levels.

LOL, nice answers, btw. Way to trash the data. :icon_chee

Thanks for the info. I was thinking about participating, but mainly because I wanted them to give feedback or maybe access to data.

I didn't make those answers up, those are from the sample questionnaire provided on the website. I was reading it to see what kind of info they were asking for, and was *shocked* by the mental image of an 11 year old breastfeeding.

maybe they meant 11 months

Great thread! That video of the presentation by Michael Holick was really interesting and all the articles have kept me busy from stuff I should have been doing like studying.
I hope to pick up some solgar gelcaps tomorrow and start with 2000 iu a day. I usually get sick a lot so if this keeps me healthy and sick free this fall and winter it would be nice.

Quick update: Got my test kit yesterday, and have one on the way for my wife; she's been on 2000iu (well, 2400iu, including her multi) for well over a year now, so I'll be interested to see her results.

So, here's my second set of results, at a dose of 7000iu/day at a BW of 170lbs:
Date:10/21/2009
D2 (ng/mL): 0
D3 (ng/mL): 94
Total (ng/mL) : 94
ref range: 32-100 ng/mL

i94ng/mL is on the high end of optimal (Cannell states 50-90ng/mL); I'm going to lower my dose to 5000iu, and then re test in 6 months.

Thanks for the update...what about the wifey?
