Can anyone tell me where the Cheapest place to train and live in Thailand is, I am guessing Chiang Mai. I have searched the internet for about 8 hours, but I am told is more expensive to book online and prices are cheaper when you book once you land?

Any input on how to get over there and how to save money once there would be great!

I think you'll find better advice for this in F11. Having said that, Chiang Mai is much cheaper than most places, both for accommodation and training, with BKK being the most expensive but also having the highest level of fights and training available.

Online prices vs prices paid in person may differ at some gyms, but generally the longer you stay the cheaper it will be. I would suggest getting in contact with the gyms by email or phone (if you have someone who speaks Thai then that makes it a lot easier).

Usually you'll find it cheaper to stay off camp at a short-term apartment rather than at the gym. Personally, I'd rather live at the gym, but that's just because if I'm there to train, I may as well put myself in the position where I can get the most from it and where I'd be least likely to slack off. It's different for everyone though.

If you're in Chiang Mai, I'd recommend stopping by Chay Yai gym. The owner, Chelsea, did a stint here in NZ as a trainer, so his English is pretty good, and the camp has a fair number of farang come through while still having some more serious fighters based there (like Perg).

The training prices in CM are over priced now IMO. If budget is absolute #1 priority you'd be best off going somewhere in Isaan (Khon Kaen, Udon, etc) and finding a gym when you get there - that doesn't have a website. Or going to a smaller town outside of Bangkok (like Lopburi - I recently saw a Instagram account for a gym there). Chay Yai in Chiang Mai used to be 2000 baht / month, now it's 8000 baht / month. All the other gyms in Chiang Mai are similar prices.

^ Good advice.

Chiang Mai is cheaper than most other popular tourist destinations (BKK, Phuket etc) but it is quite a bit more expensive than much of the rest of Thailand.

I didn't realise prices had gone up so much. I wouldn't recommend Issan as a place to go if it's your first time training in Thailand though- it's definitely a place where great fighters are bred though.
