I would hope it's all in fun. It's more community recognition imo. I guess bragging rights are inherent but I think generating more participation and activity in almost any way is a good thing.

If the "right" poster wins, it serves a purpose for the community.

Sociology 101 sort of thing. If the person wins who provides a great example for others to emulate, the forum improves. "Student of the Month", "Employee of the Month", "Sherdogger of the Year", etc.
