Hurricane Irma: Florida hit by eye of the storm leaving four dead and a million without power

FLORIDA%20OOYALA-xlarge.jpg

Hurricane Irma smashed into the US mainland on Sunday bringing with it 135 mph winds that killed several people, flooded parts of downtown Miami, and left more than a million without power.

The mammoth storm barreled its way into the Florida Keys at breakfast time ripping roofs off trailers, flattening palm trees, and hurling road signs through the air, after leaving a trail of devastation in the Caribbean where at least 25 people died.

Rick Scott, Florida's governor, said: "People ask what they can do for us. Pray for us. We need volunteers, nurses. I hope everybody will pray for us. We can pray, that’s the biggest thing we can do."

As the storm ripped through Miami waist-deep water surged through streets at least three blocks from the shore.

Roads in the downtown area were turned into rivers as water raced between office buildings and blocks of flats, while street signs swung crazily.

A giant crane collapsed and was left dangling perilously over a partially constructed high rise building.

Miami's deputy fire chief Joseph Zahralban said people in nearby structures should move somewhere safe but there was nothing else emergency services could do to help.

He said: "The weather has deteriorated to the point where we're not comfortable even sending anybody out to even evaluate the situation. So our only concern right now is the protection of life, not property."

The crane was one of more than 20 in Miami that were unable to be dismantled in time and there were fears others could come crashing down.

Some 6.4 million Floridians had been ordered to evacuate, more than a quarter of Florida' population, amid warnings they would be "on their own" if they stayed. Of those who stayed 100,000 were in shelters, but some chose to remain in their own homes.

The Republican governor said on NBC that he spoke to President Donald Trump, and "everything I've asked out of the federal government, he's made sure he gave us."

Once the storm passes, "we're going to need a lot of help," Mr Scott warned.

But he also described Florida as "a tough state. We're going to come through this."

Americans on St. Maarten tell of Irma's devastation, lawlessness; 1,200 evacuated
By LUIS MARTINEZ | Sep 10, 2017

American citizens evacuated from St. Maarten by U.S. military aircraft are telling desperate stories of survival as Hurricane Irma ravaged the island and left a precarious security situation in its wake.

More than 1,200 American citizens have been evacuated from St. Maarten at the U.S. State Department's request. An estimated 5,000 American citizens were believed to be trapped on the island that is jointly administered by France and the Netherlands.

Evacuees told stories about hiding in their hotel bathtubs fearing for their lives as the storm raged. They also told of a bank robbery and a gang of men with "long swords" who reportedly showed up at a hotel.

"The safety and security of U.S. citizens overseas is our top priority," said Heather Nauert, the State Department spokesperson. "Over the last 24 hours, Department of State has worked in close coordination with the Department of Defense to assist over 1,200 American citizens with air evacuations from St. Maarten, beginning with those needing urgent medical care."

A defense official said that evacuation flights resumed Sunday morning, shortly before 11 a.m. ET after being suspended Saturday due to high winds associated with Hurricane Jose.

Six C-130 aircraft from the Puerto Rico, New York and Kentucky Air National Guard are providing the flights, which take 45 minutes each way to Puerto Rico. Two HH-60 Guard helicopters are also assisting.

The evacuation flights began Friday evening as the C-130s began taking those needing the most urgent medical care.
According to the Puerto Rico Air National Guard, 1,268 American citizens were evacuated on 11 flights Saturday and Friday.

Below is a video that the 106th Rescue Wing of the New York National Air Guard shot on board one of their C-130 flights.

The United States does not have a consulate on St. Maarten, making it difficult to gather information about Americans still on the island.

Several Americans interviewed by ABC News upon their arrival in San Juan, Puerto Rico, described a desperate situation on St. Maarten during and after the storm. Some described how they moved couches and beds to block the ocean-facing windows in their hotel rooms as Irma raged outside.

Maureen Puckerin told ABC News the monster storm sounded like someone banging on a door accompanied by a deafening whistle that she said was "something I never want to hear again."

Puckerin said she rode out the storm in her hotel room's bathtub thinking she might die. She and others emerged from their hotel rooms for 40 minutes as the eye of the hurricane passed overhead and saw devastation everywhere with windows blown out and buildings without roofs.

After the storm she said hotel guests banded together in the rooms that had suffered the least damage. Without running water they shared toilets, drank bottled water and ate food they had stocked up on before the storm. And without power they used their phones sparingly to send daily messages to family members and quickly turning them off to conserve power.

The storm's wake has also left a breakdown of security on the island and some of the Americans felt they had been abandoned by hotel staff. Puckerin said a group of men armed with what she called "long swords" had stormed her hotel and beaten up a tourist.

Others described looters stealing purses from hotel guests and how the Dutch military had arrived at their hotel in search of men who had just robbed a bank.

The Department of State is operating a 24-hour task force to coordinate the U.S. government response to Irma and Jose. "We are coordinating with all parts of the U.S. government to ensure the safety of U.S. citizens," said Nauert. "We are also tracking requests for assistance for citizens of other countries."

Before Irma made landfall, the State Department helped the departure of U.S. citizens through commercial and charter transportation.

Just rain so far here south east of Tampa. If I die you guys can split my possessions. I'm also down to my last can of spam so pray for me.

Isn't @cooks1 also in FL, @Arkain2K ?

As mentioned before, I can only add people to the roll-call if they actually checks in and share their status in this Hurricane Irma Live Updates thread, just like the 20+ FL sherbros already reported in here since Irma started walloping the Caribbean :)

Please add my bud @Bang Bang to the list. We've been keeping tabs on him in PM but he's also a floridian.

Lost power a while back. I'm using my mac as an impromptu battery charger for my phone. Watching shows and shit but I have to stay in darkness the whole day since l also put up shutters on top of the storm grade windows. So far the weather channel tells me my area can expect up to 60mph gusts and I have to say that is a lot better than 120! Don't see much damage at all yet only leaves and palm fronds. Hopefully the power can resume quickly. Im already ordering up a whole house generator haha I had forgotten how shitty is was to lose power. I think next time a random
vacation will be in order. I think I've read that a lot of babies are made during hurricanes so thats a great entertainment/cardio/relaxation activity.....

The British's political in-fighting and finger-pointing over evacuation in the Caribbean is royally screwing their stranded people on the islands.

After being criticized from every direction for their "lack of response", the U.K Foreign Office doesn't want to look weak and steadfastly refuse to ask the U.S military for help, so our troops can't just kidnap random British citizens without a U.S passport and bring them back to Puerto Rico with us, while the British naval task force is still on their way.

British nationals stranded on those destroyed islands will just have to find ways survive until official British assistance arrive in the next two week, while gangs of machete-wielding looters are roaming the streets right now.

Exclusive: British tourists are 'abandoned' on hurricane island as US airlifts its citizens to safety
Nicola Harley Patrick Sawer | 9 SEPTEMBER 2017

It was the moment they thought salvation had come.

With Hurricane Irma wreaking apocalyptic devastation around them the two British couples breathed a sigh of relief when they saw soldiers turn up in jeeps to rescue stranded holidaymakers from the ruins of their hotel.

But their relief turned to dismay when the troops refused to taken them, despite there being room in their vehicles, because they were not US nationals.

Bank worker Liz Jackson, 33, and her partner Craig Guest, 34, from Barnsley, who are on the island of Saint Martin alongside a couple from Nottingham, said they now feel abandoned, not just by the Americans, but also by their own government.

Ms Jackson and Mr Guest had flown to the Caribbean for what they hoped would be an idyllic holiday among the sand and palm trees of Sint Maarten, a Dutch protectorate covering nearly half of the island.

But when Irma’s 185mph winds hit Saint Martin on Wednesday they devastated their hotel, the luxury Royal Palm Beach resort in Simpson Bay, ripping off the doors and windows to their seaview apartments.

By Saturday morning - with Irma carrying on towards Florida and the US mainland - the two British couples had been left with just one bottle of water between them and no food or power. Outside the hotel there were reports of looters being shot.

With 70 per cent of the homes on the island destroyed, looters armed themselves with machetes and took over hotels.

British help is not expected to arrive until Monday during which time a second hurricane, Jose, was expected to strike their location.

The anger of Ms Jackson and the others at the failure of the British government to send help was compounded when a convoy of Dutch army jeeps descending on the hotel on Saturday to rescue hundreds of its citizens and fly them off the island before Jose hit.

Ms Jackson’s brother Andrew yesterday told The Sunday Telegraph: "There were spaces available in the jeeps but they were told they could not get on as they were not US citizens and there was no arrangement with the British Government.”

When the convoy left without them Ms Jackson and Mr Guest made their way to the devastated Princess Juliana airport in the hope of trying to get on a military flight off the island - only to be told once again by officials that they were not eligible for evacuation.

The couple filmed a Dutch official telling them: " We only have US flights. They decide who they are going to take. We can only send through US citizens at the moment."

On Saturday night the flight left and they were stranded in the airport not daring to venture onto the streets or back to the remnants of their luxury hotel.

They were not alone, three Britons were also stranded and a family from Antigua, whose five-year-old daughter was refused a place on the plane because she did not share her parents US citizenship.

Mr Jackson, also from Barnsley, said: "They tried to get one of the last military flights off the island and they were just pulling all the non-US citizens out of the queue. She is totally distraught."

Late on Saturday night, their families got the news they were desperate to hear, they had landed in neighbouring Puerto Rico.

Mr Jackson added: "We have no idea how they have managed to get a flight, but they've been in contact to say they are now safe. Only a few hours ago the last flight went and they were absolutely terrified.

"They only had one bottle of water left and no food. There is no power, they were in heat of 35C, and were panicking and scared. They could not return to their hotel as it had been destroyed and there were looters with machetes."

Emma Loughlin, a friend of Ms Jackson, added: "Nothing is being done yet Americans are being evacuated. Armed looters are out in force."

A Foreign Office source said Consular help is not expected to arrive in the area until Monday.
