Thank you and goodbye BJJ

Sure he was, but I found the threat that you "still have to the ability to punch pricks in the face" to be rather amusing considering this is t3h interwebz. Sorry that you can't train anymore but there's no need for silliness like that.

True. But how do you react when you're being prodded with a stick by someone also hiding behind the confines of the internet. Reason and honesty don't work? I haven't punched a prick in the face since I was 11 years old.I'm just pissed off coz it sucks.

I'm kind of confused by this thread. You write that your ankle has been banged up too many times because of BJJ, but then write your ankle was banged up prior to starting bjj. If it became more banged up, is that because you're training with people who don't acknowledge you tapping or because you're not tapping soon enough?

I'm not trying to kick you when you're down but this thread is suspicious. I've been seriously injured (I have little to no function in my left tricep) as a result of bjj, but I continue to train. I'm not sure how your ankle/foot could be messed up other than you training with douche bags or you being too stubborn to tap. Warts? How did you get warts?

Ignore it? Seems a reasonable suggestion.

yeah i can handle the infectious stuff, comes with the territory. When your wife pleads you not to go back after she picks you up again because you can't drive home, you have to think seriously about what you're trying to achieve.

when your wife pleads with me, i just leave anyways. (sorry man, couldnt resist, come back to bjj and u can kick my ass over it)

Never had warts, started JJ then got warts. Not conclusive not i'm guessing the two are connected. I don't really have skin to skin contact with anyone other than training partners and my wife and she doesn't have them.

I don't really understand your suspiscion. My ankle has been weakened prior to starting BJJ by being a drunken dickhead like the rest of my peers. In a sense i'm lucky this never resulted in a more serious injury. My brother perforated his bowel falling from scaffolding while out with me, he nearly died and has a scar like a massive vagina down his torso. BJJ just proved too much for this weak link in my body and gave my the same injury over and over. I'm now just lamenting the fact that these mistakes of my youth have scuppered something that I've grown to love.

TS..dude you gotta get a TapOut jersey now...people who trained a lil bit, believe they're still part of their past jujitsu tinkering.. You'll think you're tougher than everyone else cause you know how to do a half assed arm bar...

Your funeral dude, she's riddled with staph and athletes foot

Thats exactly what I don't want to become. when its done, its done. I still reserve the right to give "informed commentary" when watching MMA though. :icon_lol:

heh I went threw white belt injury free xcept a few minor mat burns i have been a blue belt for a month and have sprained my wrist sprained my ankle and sore as hell due to white belts gone crazy but i don't care i keep on going and won't stop until i physically am unable

Good luck dude, you're obviously made of stern stuff. I don't know many people that got a belt without injury. When I mention my ankle, they're all too keen to list the injuries and time outs they've had due to training.

You were drunk while rolling? From what you're saying it's other activities that hampered your abilities to continue in bjj, not bjj itself. It's sort of like me saying basketball hampered my ability to dunk but I broke my leg in a skiing accident before that. The way this thread started it seemed like someone hurt your ankle (or it was hurt repeatedly), when really it was hurt prior to that.

Why would you guess no? 3 or so not-so-telling posts and you know somebody? This thread exposed some douchebags, or at least people who woke up on the wrong side of the bed. I started a thread a little while back about my knees, and facing nearly the same situation. I still don't know how it's going to turn out for me, but I wish you luck TS.

Because if he saw a doctor his ankle would have been diagnosed, and the recovery time would have been stated.

A doctor would have recommended he stay away from bjj or quit entirely and if a doctor said that than he,would have mentioned it in a post.... But he didn't.

A doctor would be able to identify whether or not his injury makes bjj impossible.

That really sucks man, good luck in your future. Its a tough decision but I understand it.

And all the guys being douches - you must not have ever had a serious injury. Its the worst feeling in the world, as if your body betrayed you. Good luck domn8.

Here's a depressing thought. I've spent six years training BJJ full time, ever since I left university. I could, at any moment, suffer an injury that would put me out for well over a year. Heck, even two or three before getting back to full fitness. In doing so, I would lose not only my entire opportunity to be competitive in the adult division, as well as my ability to perform my job properly and everything that comes with that. And whilst I try not to think about it, this is the reality for any one of us who trains. The consequences might vary slightly, but don't kick a man when he's down, because next time it could be you.

100% agree. Thanks Oli for injecting sense, reason and compassion into the thread.

I can understand letting go. As I sit here with an ice pack on my sholder and neck because I can't turn my head to the left or lift my arm over my shoulder. At 37 I ask myself a lot how much longer will I put myself through this.

I've got an ankle also that will dislocate extremely easy. I have had to modify how I roll around it for years. But once in awhile it still happens. And every time it takes a little longer to heal.

I can't remember the last time I woke up inthe morning and something didn't ache or pop. I still love it but everyone has to hang up the gi at some point. Sometimes it happens sooner rather than latter.

Time catches up to us all.

You say you favour guard as well TS. Perhaps if you began to dabble in more open guards or half guards rather than lock-your-ankles-together-and-hunt-for-subs-closed-guard you might have a better time of it.

Just try to remember the situations that jacked your ankle up in BJJ and avoid those situations, no matter how much they are your favourite set ups etc.

And surgery may be your best route when it comes down to it. You may quit BJJ but what happens down the road when your an old man and you snap off your ankle because you just never got it taken care of. I personally would not want "walking or jogging" to be the maximum amount of effort I could use my foot for, regardless of sport or activity.
My boss had a bum knee that he just wound up leaving due to a tough as nails mentality. He would still run and work out and all that, and just ice it when it was sore. He's since in the past year gone through several surgeries because it was either that or in a few years needing a full replacement.

Anyone giving the thread starter a hard time, calling him a pussy, is pretty stupid and proabably hasn't been around long enough to appreciate the havoc the sport can wreak on a healthy body. When you really look around at the older black belt population, a lot of them are seriously fucked up. If a guy decides he doesn't want to do that to himself, well, good for him and good luck. But don't criticize the guy - he has his reasons.

I dread the day I have to do something like this. 2 mcl tears and a herniated c6 c7 make me scared that it may not be too far off.
