Thank you and goodbye BJJ

I'm thirty two. And cheers, the only time I was ever disappointed in myself during BJJ was when i tapped too early or got tired. I tried to make that a rarity.

I take back my defense of you... there is never such a thing as tapping too early. It's not fucking Abu Dhabi night every night. That's your own damn fault, I'm sorry.

My right ankle so jacked it's permantly a 1/3 size bigger than the left one and my doctor says it can't get much worse. Everyone I roll with gets made clear to that I don't do toe holds.

Like others have said there comes a time when the risk far outweighs the reward. I was a boxer, a professional action shooter and a professional painballer before I found BJJ so I'm sure that when the day comes for whatever reason I will find something else to add to the list. Hopefully it will because I grew bored but being on my second joint surgery it will most likely be the latter. Fuck'it I'm giving gawd or nature my body back the way it was intended to be: broken, wornout and useless.

I'm sorry, man. When I was in high school I suffered a freak ankle injury and my ankle was never the same. I'm now 26 and it still gives me some problems if I tweak it wrong. I gave up soccer and a lot of physical activity and a lot of people gave me shit for it, saying I was just making excuses. Even my sister and my dad gave me shit for it but no one really knows that pain unless he's actually experienced it.

When I was 24 I started practicing bjj. About 1 month in, some motherfucker picked me up slammed me right on my back. I injured my back and it hurt for about a year. I don't think I'll get injured again and this tough road showed me how much I really want to learn bjj. But if I keep getting injured like I'll be like you one day. I can only hope the worst is behind me.

It sounds like bjj has hurt you too much. I'm sorry, man. Good luck in your other endeavors.

Shut up, he's fucking injured, you prick. I hate this stupid jock attitude that if you quit, no matter what fucking reason you have, or if you sit out, then you're a pussy and a quitter and all that stupid shit. Just to let you know, I normally don't cuss, even on Sherdog. That stupid shit makes me madder than hell...

On a more positive note, that sucks, man. It sounds like you're really hesitant. Realize, though, you don't have to leave the sport entirely. You could be a referee or something. Or even just hang out around the gym. Unless you feel like you can't be around it at all or else you'll be tempted.

Thanks man, I'm considering boxing just to stay around the gym but i tried MT during one of my lay-off and all I could think about was grappling.

People get really brave on the internet. If they carried that attitude into real life they'd never tap.

Need to move on and not give the "I could have been a contender" line. Still love to spectate.

Stupid question but ..... Did you actually have a DOCTOR examine your ankle?

I'm gonna guess no.

Why would you guess no? 3 or so not-so-telling posts and you know somebody? This thread exposed some douchebags, or at least people who woke up on the wrong side of the bed. I started a thread a little while back about my knees, and facing nearly the same situation. I still don't know how it's going to turn out for me, but I wish you luck TS.

You gotta find a school w/ old farts like me who roll like we absolutley have to go to work in the morning.

Nah, you misunderstand. I didn't get injured from not tapping. I'm talking about those few occasions when you were just tired of someone's weight on you and tapped to their crappy arm triangle just to rest. I regret that coz I was healthy and capable. there is such a thing as tapping too early, your grip is broken on an armbar struggle and you tap before even attempting to escape.

Maybe thats just me though, a pussy by all accounts.

Thanks, for a minute I actually felt peer pressure pushing me back towards the mat. Its pointless though. I'll get injured, I'll be a crap training partner.

you still have no answered the question tho... did you see a doc yet? if yes, what is the diagnosis?

you never know until you see a doc dude. it could be something completely fixable. if you love BJJ so much you should at least get a doc's opinion man.

I felt like this at one time but Iam glad that I stuck it out it now is actually my one place of sanity.

Several times. Ligament tears. I'm told i've torn them many times (I know this already) and they're only going to weaker. Heres some Physio exercises, heres a balance board, resistance bands for rehab. Surgery? c'mon.

Looks pretty answered to me.

TS, consider just looking for a more recreational gym, as well as what others are saying. You might not tap to a triangle escape, but know your limits and let go of the submission before you get hurt. Telling your partners to leave your ankles alone as well. You can continue to train if you really want to. Not everyone needs to train like they are prepping for a competition.
And the warts and staph and stuff. It's uncommon where I train, so maybe you just need a gym that is more considerate of hygiene, if you know what I mean.

Good luck in whatever you choose to do. Hope you have no regrets.

I did see a doc yes. I'm pretty sure i did answer that question. free health care here in the UK and fortunately my wife is a nurse and hooked me up with appointments with ortho surgeons/consultants. general opinion being that as I can still walk and jog at this point surgery would be unneccesarily risky and probably wouldn't help anyway.

You're probably right but I dont think I could train like that. I love the aquisition of skills but the competition, even just casual, is what I really love about BJJ. I just couldn't ask someone to take it easy on me in sparring. Maybe I'll change my tune one day but i've been thinking about this decision for some time.

dont quit

take a nice long break, get your mind right and then make a decision

maybe the quitter comment was premature but I honestly didn't see anything too bad on that list of reasons. Several of them are preventable too.

aaargh, I don't want to quit. I thought 18 months was a long break. What else can heal? I've already been through this but got to the point where i thought, I can run, jump, burpee, squat, lunge so why can't I train BJJ?

I figure BJJ has unique pressures on the body, especially on the ankles of someone who favours the guard.

Wow, you have the power to be sarcastic to people who are heartbroken that that can't do what they love anymore? Really? He wasn't being a prick?

Sure he was, but I found the threat that you "still have to the ability to punch pricks in the face" to be rather amusing considering this is t3h interwebz. Sorry that you can't train anymore but there's no need for silliness like that.

yeah i can handle the infectious stuff, comes with the territory. When your wife pleads you not to go back after she picks you up again because you can't drive home, you have to think seriously about what you're trying to achieve.
