You've given me warts, athletes foot, numerous tweaked elbows, staph, myriad cuts/bruises.....pride, confidence, a subdued but winking air of superiority and some odd clothing.

But you've f**ked my ankle too many times now and I'm afraid I'll never climb, snowboard, run and walk with any proficiency if i keep turning up to the mat.

Sad but true. I think I can keep the pride, confidence, a subdued but winking air of superiority though. Adeus.

If you don't mind my asking, what rank are you? How much time a week did you train? How long have you been training? Did you train gi or nogi? Did you wrestle before BJJ? What got you into BJJ in the first place?

Well it is bjj, not a picnic. I don't want to sound like a dick but what did you expect? Once you're proficient at the technique it won't be nearly as rough on your body. (or so I'm told, I'm a white belt)

'a subdued but winking air of superiority' that is misbegotten because I'm a weakling and a quitter.

Nothing wrong with knowing when to call it a day. There's more to life than Bjj, good luck with everything.

If you don't mind my asking, what exactly happened to your ankle?

On-off-on-off, due to ankle that had been busted a few times before i ever saw a mat due to a youth spent stumbling around too drunk to watch my step. popped the first time in BJJ with fat necked powerlifter trying to break out of my triangle. At this point I thought I was close to getting my blue belt.

Didn't rest it/let it recover properly and really f**ked it having to quit for 18 months (jumped the gun several times and it flared up again). Then was tempted to go back by a gym opening up with 10 minutes drive. Started Nogi got to the position where I could sub about 3/4's of my training partners (but still had massive inbalances in my beginner game). popped again. repeat story. I think at this point considering the amount of time I've spent practically disabled, I have to realise its done.

With no sense of hostility or sarcasm whatsoever, I hope it doesn't happen to you. That you can't train anymore.

Time to switch to ... Japanese Ju Jutsu (JJJ) ... or at least Aikido or Systema.

You don't sound like a dick. BJJ is rough, thats why i'm all f**ked up. Loved it but i'm not going to cripple myself. Hope you get to do it for the rest of your life.

JJJ is actually where I started. Considering the constant breakfall/hipthrows you're made to do, this is not an option.

why not just take an extended break?

i am working long hours and will be starting school again and i have literally no time to dedicate to BJJ, until i finish school or move to a different job that i can train again

I think when the worst damage was done (several years before I started BJJ) when a girl dropped her cardigan on the Vegas strip. I reacted ridiculously slow due to Yard Margaritas but decided to pick it up and run to give it back to her. I missed a kerb and tripped. All sorts of pain and uglyness.

Stupid question but ..... Did you actually have a DOCTOR examine your ankle?

I'm gonna guess no.

Honestly, I've been down that road several times. Watching BJJ vids, stretching my guard, thinking I'll go back after X time. Same result eventually. I'm not tearful at this situation, I just thought i'd try and share my predictament with people that can understand the anguish.

Several times. Ligament tears. I'm told i've torn them many times (I know this already) and they're only going to weaker. Heres some Physio exercises, heres a balance board, resistance bands for rehab. Surgery? c'mon.

You are kicking a man when he can't go the ground. I still have to the ability to punch pricks in the face.

i went through torn labrum (sp?) surgery only so i could train bjj. i have to squat using a frigging shoulder shrug bar

What you got up for sale? Gi's, dvd's books etc?? Big Boy needs to come up.
