I'd probably flee somewhere with power but the difference is I don't have constituents. You take that salary and the perks of being a career politician, you should probably stick around and help people in a situation like this.
 
Taking his family somewhere comfortable would be fine if, like people are correctly pointing out, he was actually working to accomplish something to address the state of things that led to this. He can make calls and coordinate from anywhere.
