Tarantino Goes Off on Paul Dano

QT is wrong as fuck here because Dano went toe-to-toe w/ DDL in TWBB & never once got boxed out of any scene they shared, not even the iconic final scene (milkshake scene)
That's a tough one to judge, because it was his job to get boxed out and overwhelmed by DDL's character.

I think his overall persona worked in that flick, but still, ain't nobody talking about Paul Dano's performance in TWBB. Could've easily been someone else, and the movie wouldn't have suffered. That was a complete showcase for DDL.

definitely not wrong, but

i disagree strongly w/ this. i think there are other actors who could’ve played the role & comported themselves well, but who might not have captured, or communicated, the same pathetic imitation of Daniel Plainview’s virulent ambition.

i always think of the scene when DP repents at the altar of Eli’s church. Eli foolishly thinks he finally asserts power over DP (this is his domain, after all), & puts on a hell of a show of it. the sermon ends & the congregation cracks back to reality—among the clutter of congregants you see DP speaking to Eli as they shake hands. you don’t hear what is said, but Dano’s expression is like wax on a warm day. it’s not much, & it almost gets lost in the noise of everything going on in-frame, but it’s perfect.

That was a complete showcase for DDL.
unquestionably

I'm fine with QT's cameos. He knows when to do them and when not to.

Like in Basterds, he would've been completely out of place and distracting to the film, so he did not do a cameo.

But in Django, he fit just fine, and added a bit of humor in the way he killed himself.
He was dreadful and killed the mood completely.

Disagree completely. Thought he played the character perfectly. Everything about him was the opposite of DDL’s character, and yet both were extremists for exactly the same reason.

This is one of the dumbest comments I’ve ever seen made by a director ever especially one of Tarantinos caliber. Paul Dano is consistently excellent in everything he does and There Will be Blood is arguably his best performance. Tarantino is losing it, I can tell because he said Austin Butler ( lolol) would have been a better choice for that role.

To be 23 fucking years old and take that role on short notice too after another actor dropped out. He held his own completely with DDL. DDL may have given the better performance, but who has ever outshined him in any movie?

Tarantino is massively overrated, especially on Sherdog.

Most of the stuff that comes out of Quentin’s mouth is hyperbolic, absurd shit. I havent paid attention to anything since Pulp Fiction. He says stupid shit to stay in the public sphere, this is just another autistic outburst.

Tarantino is a washed, overrated, repetitively getting worse with every movie imp.

Butler prob would’ve been really good too, but he is way too handsome for the role imo

Imagine have a career as a hollywood director and all you known for is copying scenes and never having a movie that says anything. I think Tarantino doesn't get that he is on the same tier as Michael Bay, Guy Ritchie, or Zach Snyder. I think he imagines himself as in the same tier as Mann or Scorsese.

I think it's amazing & kind of beautiful that you can be somewhat of a moron, or a huge asshole, completely wrong about a lot of the shit you say, and yet still make incredible movies.

It's more proof that great art transcends, & deserves to stick around on this rock long after our fallible ass selves have sluffed off the coil

Also, Dano was exceptional in TWBB. Struck this perfect blend of weird vulnerability & creepy inauthenticity, that so many actors would have not been able to pull off

Sometimes you need a guy to please the average dude and that is Dano. Cant all be Tom Cruise and The Rock.

Has Tarantino done a single movie that required an ounce of legitimate acting? Waltz maybe?

His stories are all over the top pulp, which affords the characters and actors all kinds of leniencies in acting ability. For Quentin to even be engaging the idea of acting chops on a serious level, is a bit absurd imo.

Tarantino hasn't attempted anything even ball park of a movie like TWBB.

What does that even mean? His movies are always filled with great, if not iconic performances. What is "legitimate acting"? Brooding and serious at all times? What does the content have to do with the performance and the supposed "leniency" the actors are afforded?

My point is hes one dimensional. Very. He’s the last director who should be talking about acting skills as a broad concept.
