I remember sometime in 1996 I was at my aunt's house and one of her friends came over with his lap top, it was like 3 inches thick when closed, but he could get on the internet by hooking it up to the phone line at my aunts house. Now looking back I wonder how that worked, how was he able to get on the internet at my aunts house when she wasn't paying for any internet provider?

It didn't matter what phone line you use. If you had an AOL subscription or something, you could tap into it from any phone line.
