Tai chi Chuan in MMA

One thing Tai Chi gives you is balance, incredible balance, at least that's what I hear.

LOL@ the delusional sherdoggers talking about Tai Chi being an effective martial art for real fighting.

You guys have been badly brainwashed by traditional martial art culture...

Every martial arts and their theories / techniques need to be tested and proven in real, full-contact fighting. Any martial arts that keep on failing in real fighting need to be modified or they should be thrown out all together.

I wouldn't go as far as to say it's very effective as a real fighting system on it's own, because it has many limitations. Too stationary, no head movement, no real guard and so forth. But it's an effective tool. As I mentioned earlier, just like something like Sumo or Mongolian wrestling would be an effective tool.

It is basicly an exercise in balance, diverting momentums, explosion(with the right style), mental fortitude and relaxation. It's nice to do on off days as an aerobic exercise and it has helped my game out a lot. Balance is one of the most important things in fighting.

I do not think Tai Chi Chuan through the way it is taught now. "just form" is NOT good for fighting.

However not a ring or combat sport Tai Chi has its own value. Some people practise yoga and they do that for mind and body.

Tai Chi has forms, Pushing Hands, Selfdefense, Weapons, Meditation and many other subjects. When a person is taught the full art, i believe it in fact can be effective for selfdefense.

But that is different then trying it against a mma or groundfighter.

I believe it is silly to challenge a Tai Chi practitioner against a groundfighter. You know up front that the Tai Chi person does not do anything on the ground.

So what is the gain then?

Just practise for mind, body and spirit :)

I hope this is the right thread to ask this question: can a person who has had severe heart failure and has recovered 50% heart function take up non-competitive Tai Chi Chuan ??? Thx in advance.
