Coaching Taco’s Team

Check those Oregon numbers, that might of been me
Lol, I know what threw me off, it was seeing Mari in the previous convo. Cause for real I was like "why is this dude asking me that?"

Kev moved to 7-0 and captured his third tko win. Nothing to write home about, he boxed beautifully but the opponent was younger and less experienced.

I asked him to not hurt the kid too bad but also not hot dog and patronize the opponent either. We carried him through the first and put him away in the second. Ref waived it off and everyone seemed ok which is nice.

Two weeks out from silver gloves where we got the shit luck of having a 5x national champion training 10 miles away for our first bout. Kev could win nationals but he’s got to get past Oregon first. Pitting 110 fights over 7 years against our 7 fights over 2 years experience.

I swear to god we can do it though. We’ve watched tape, trained, worked and schemed. Not easy, but possible.

The experience will be amazing either way. If he only fights to his best ability and don't freeze (supposing he know all that info about his opponent) that's already a win in my book. I hope he pulls it off, tho... That's the kind of win that's really reassuring for the both of you

He’s got his head in the right place. He’s not afraid to lose, and he thinks he can win. The coaching staff is all there with him

Kid gave it his all and came up short. We lost a split decision but it was one hell of a fight. Very proud of Kevin for going out there and not being intimidated or afraid.

First round was a toss up, I thought we lost the second and won the third. Took a peek at the scores afterwards and wasn’t far off- we won the third on all three cards, lost the second on all three, and one judge gave us the first.

Opponent and his team were friendly, classy, and we had a good chat afterwards. Hoping the opponent can go on and win his 6th national title off of this

Another win for Kevin. Decision win with a great knock down and another 8 count in the third. The kid is almost two years older and from a good gym so this was another test for us. Not as important as the last fight, but a good barometer to see how our power holds up against more mature fighters.

Kevin is slick and the other team played the game right- pressure and volume from the start. First round was close, I think we won it but I could understand if the judges didn’t see it that way. Started to take over in the second and then really stepped on the gas in the third.

We’re going to continue working on an aggressive mobile style to deal with these brawlers. Kevin was winning the exchanges when they’d both plant and throw bc he had better defensive mechanics, but it’s not something I want him relying on.

We’re skipping nationals bc I don’t want him missing school for a boxing tournament but have his name in for a few local shows, a big tournament on cinco de mayo and then we’re going to be at the nationals in Vegas in June. He’s lost a split to the kid who won the whole thing so I’m confident we’re got a shot of clinching our first national title

Another first round finish, a Gazelle off the body jab. The kid wasn’t out cold but the way he fell makes me think he out for a second.

He won his fight first day but struggled bc of cutting weight and not sleeping on account of the early, long drive. we had no one in the open 125 bracket and had to go down for a match bout against a 119er. They had 4 fights to our 9 but the kid was also 2 years older (1 year and 51 months older. Just barely able to match according to the rules) so I figured it be ok. This was the first guy kev couldn’t hurt (he swears he hurt him but the kid didn’t show it) which I think messed with him. Poor kid whacked Kevin with a head butt and an elbow almost back to back which is the worst he’s been hurt in a fight which also really messed with him. Good experience all around.

Day 2 was a match bout and he was well rested and well fed. Hit the scale at 123 and we caught a match bout with a 120lb kid with 34 fights and some hardware from national tournaments. I posted the fight above hit if you don’t hate 42 seconds to spare, here’s the finish:

Sitting in a roadside casino in bumfuck Oregon for a pro debut.

Story time- years back this little baby faced mma fighter blew his knee out and decided to box while it healed. Compact frame, always in shape, aggressive inside Mexican style. We took 8 fights together and won 5 of them (1 loss in the finals of the Oregon golden gloves tourney and one robbery, imo). He beat some tough customers despite still being pretty green in the sport

Knee heals and it’s back to mma and kickboxing, but now I’m working as his striking coach. Over the last few years we’ve won titles in both sports at 135, 145, and 155. 6-1 mma, 2-1 kickboxing. Last amateur fight was mma against a 6-0 prospect from California and Sammy choked his ass out when he panicked wrestled after trying to deal with Sam’s boxing.

With that, Sam retires from the ammys and we’re taking him pro in mma.

Until 8 days ago when my phone rang and a boxing promoter I happen to actually like and trust (rare in this game) hit me up for a short notice fight against a debuter. 7-7 combined ammy mma and kickboxing, 0-1 pro kickboxing. Opponent is a soft 155, Sam was 168 when I asked him and easily dropped 10 this week to make 160 for the contracted weight.

It’s a pretty big honor to be there for Sam’s boxing debut, kickboxing debut, most his mma fights, and now in his corner for his pro debut. He’s also the first guy to go from amateur debut to pro debut in my program.

So, without further ado- Sammy “bing bong” mednick

Kevin put hands on the #3 ranked 125er in the country weekend before last and came out with a win. Great fight, I think this was the first kid Kevin’s had to take seriously because he had good power along with the speed and technique to use it.

Kevin’s in the red:

another young man on our team Dylan fought and lost a decision which I think he won, but on rewatch I understand the judges picking the other guy. Dylan isn’t active in the quiet times, he is statue frozen and waiting to go or counter. The other kid was moving his head, hands and feet when nothing was happening and the optics favored him for it. Only Dylan’s 3rd fight and 2nd opponent so there’s lots of room to grow.

We had a tournament in Seattle last weekend and Kevin won 2 more putting him at 14-1 I think. Day 1 he boxed like an absolute asshole. All power shots, no set ups, combinations or jabs. He had it in his head to try and finish the kid and ended up throwing bricks for 3 rounds while Ignoring his coaches. Early in the second my assistant head coach and I literally stopped saying anything, sat back in our chairs and just watched for the round. If he’s not going to listen then I’m not going to shout.

Day 2 he locked in and boxed way better. Had the kid hurt a few times but let him off the hook which we need to work on. He’s got to capitalize when he hurts guys on the national stage or we’re going to get robbed. Kevin boxed clean and technical which was nice and secured a win over the #5 119lb fighter nationwide.

We also had a hwt female boxer Paige compete and beat the brakes off her opponent. Her right hand didn’t miss and she was awarded 2 standing 8 counts on route to a unanimous decision. Paige is also officially 100lbs from when she started boxing so I’m calling that a win as well. 2-0 for her this weekend

Sam “bing bong” mednick wins his pro mma debut via decision. 30-26, 30-26, 30-27

The kid moved to 16-1 and is officially the best 125er for his age in 6 states. With this win he punched his ticket to the national silver gloves tournament in 6 weeks
