Coaching Taco’s Team

That’s dirty. Oh well, good luck brother.
Congrats to Kev too. Looked so comfortable in the ring sparring when I saw him. He has good teammates with age and size advantage who let him work lol
Thanks my dude. Collin boxed his heart out and lost a split. Easily won the first, lost the second and I thought he won the third. Dude had good pressure and USA boxing rewards that aggression. Collin boxed his ears off moving backwards. The kid looked stellar

In Detroit with Tia for the national golden gloves tourney. First fight is Tuesday and it’s looking like a favorable match up for us. She’s at weight and locked in. Looking forward to our teams first fight on the national stage

Tia was absolutely positively fucking robbed. We were warned that ring 3 had been having some funky decisions and sure as hell we “lost” a 3/2 split despite clearly winning 2 rounds and having a 60/40 third round

Im gobsmacked. The opponent was head down looking dejected while they read the decision and looked shocked when her hand was raised.

@Sinister the opponent was from Texas, so fucking of course.

Yeah Texas, Cali, and NY. If you're fighting them you're getting f*cked.

The national golden gloves are over and I’m finally home to pet my dogs and harass my wife.

We had a young man from Oregon lose a close one in the finals, and a woman from Seattle win the 132lb bracket. The rest of the team from Oregon, Nevada, Washington and Arizona all got picked off in or before rhe semi finals.

My big take away for next year is realizing how much the GG’s reward fighting over boxing. Where as USA Boxing rewards and pressure, golden gloves seems to reward power and aggression far more. If you’re going to out “slick” your opponent you need to be violent in your counter shots.

Few updates since it’s been a minute- Collin got in his own head about the loss and decided he didn’t want to go on to regionals. No one could convince him otherwise so I ended up benching him for a while until he got his head on straight. Jack also is taking a step back from competition boxing due to head trauma. He has only had 6 fights and has nothing to worry on yet, but it’s not the sort of thing I’m going to push someone on.

Tia didn’t have to box in Vegas at regionals because she didn’t have an opponent so we leave for Detroit for nationals next week.

Collin made his triumphant return to the ring today and trounced an accomplished boxer from Canada in the first round of a big two day tournament here. He boxed beautifully, if a little cocky in there but he needs to peacock a little to compete at his best ability. I don’t love it but I gotta let the kid fly.

And fly he shall when he ships out for the navy in 6 weeks. Surprising us all, he up and enlisted. Love the kid, I’m fuckin heart broken but happy for him. He’s the sort of free floating, well raised, Never land type that the military will be good for.

Lastly, the littlest Kevin made his debut and won inside the first minute of the first round. He’s 13, fought up a weight class and crushed the kid. He’s slick, boxes out of both stances, counter punches beautifully and loves to learn. I’ve got a short clip here:

Hands down the most potential of anyone in the gym right now. He was fight ready in 6 months and giving his older, more experienced teammates more than a lottle trouble inside of a year.

Kev had his second fight tonight against a young man from a solid team who had 10 or so himself. He won a unanimous decision and looked excellent.

I’m telling yall right now if this kid sticks with it we might have something special here. I’ll post some clips after I post them to social media.

Liam Harrison talks about stance switching in this fight breakdown with Andrei kulebin. IIRC he says something along the lines of how leg kicking him forced him to fight southpaw, although he CAN fight southpaw, most are not comfortable/efficient out of their usual stance. He goes on further to say Fabio pinca is one of the few that can fight both stances comfortably/efficiently. Something along those lines

This raises a question ill make a new thread about

Fabio Pinca and Dany Bill are amazing at being ambidextrous.

I remember Lamsongkram would slow down the pace of fights to his style with stance switches too.

A lot of fighters are good at attacking from both stances, but not defending.
Switch with a switcher and apply pressure, they will usually revert to normal stance on instinct.

This was always my course of action as a southpaw when my partnered switched. Little kev hit a couple beautiful defensive stance switches and counter shots the start of the first when his opponent sprinted across the ring and started throwing.

A few clips from Kevin’s 3rd fight. We knew we probably had the opponent out gunned so the plan was to get ring time. Kevin wanted to work on going to the body, I wanted him working on shifting between stances. He did both beautifully and won an easy decision.

We’ve got a big tournament locally this weekend. I’ve got 3 registered including him. There’s a match bout after that while we focus on development for silver gloves. I think he’ll make it to nationals this year so we want to be prepared.

Full fights here if anyone’s interested. If we’ve talked about switching stances in boxing then Kevin is a prime example of how I want it developed and used. He still needs to work on smoothing out his transitions, but he’s got the idea.

Thanks man. My first class came and went and did well, but I feel like the measure of a team/program is our ability to continually put out strong competitors

Like any good D1 wrestling or football programs.
You certainly have the right outlook on this thing to real share your knowledge and it shows sir.

That's how programs gain prestige, and you're on the forefront of these efforts.
Can't hate on that my friend.

Kev won his fight. Not his best performance but it was enough. Fighting again tomorrow, im going to make sure we get his focus right before he’s in there.

First round liver shot TKO against a kid with almost 20 fights to Kevin’s 5.

We’ve got a match bout in a month with an older kid from a tough gym. After that it’s state silver gloves. Hopefully onto regionals and then nationals after that

Coach Jake sent me that video and asked me what I thought of him having the moniker "The Body Snatcher"...even asked me if I could contact Mike about it. I thought it was weird of him to ask considering I saw you in the corner lol
