Super punch out was a s***** sequel

It was a good sequel. But nothing could beat the original.

It was still a fun game, it had a few things that the original lacked, like what was mentioned Little Mac was a great character as a little pint sized guy up against an assortment of giants, and Mac with rather weightless punches outside of the uppercut which was hilarious. The sequel you didn't have that same underdog appeal and always felt weighter and deadlier with punches especially powered up which wasnt too hard to do. The error of margin also felt a lot different most of the time. Tyson uppercuts, Sandman uppercuts and plenty of others had moves that could wreck in a hit or a few more.

Secondly, the opponents in the original all had soooo much character and charm in terms of looks and design and their telegraphs. Maybe a bit too culturally stereotypical for modern audiences unfortunately.

Decided to give this a go on the Switch. I have played a few times, but never beaten the game or gotten particularly far. It's really disappointing how easy the first six opponents are if you are familiar with Punch Out at all. I cruised through until I hit Masked Muscle, who gave me problems for a bit.
Now Sandman is whooping my ass. The delayed uppercuts get me every single time. I remember Sandman had some kind of gimmick when you hit him with bodyshots on the NES version, but I can't tell if that's the case here.
I don't quite understand the mechanics, so I think I need to read the manual. When you have full meter, the speed punches seem a lot less useful than the power ones, so I am probably doing something wrong there. And sometimes my regular punches go much faster, but I don't know why.
The game is beautiful, and the sprites look better than I remember. I think the voice samples could have helped add a lot of character to the game, but are pretty weak mostly. Gonna keep at it until I beat the game.

Edit: So, after reading the manual I learned that in addition to the super meter at the bottom of the screen that grants access to your "knock out punches" on the A button, there is also a "powered up" state, represented by the background of your character portrait. (From green to red, flashing when full.) This powered up state is what gave me the speedier punches that I noticed before, and it apparently also increases the damage of your knock out punches.
