SUMO - 2023 Aki Basho (Sept 10th - Sept 24th)

@Fork Thanks for the mention, solid first two days, I just wish Keisho felt like he was all there, I am rooting for Kirishima, I hope he can pull through.

In general, though, Sumo has been on and off for me lately, with injuries happening to wrestlers I like, the yokozuna on and off, etc. I hope Hoshoryu and Kirishima make this a basho to remember, with Keisho maybe surprising everyone and stomp his mark as the #1 ozeki.

Or who knows, maybe Hotukofuji finally makes it.

Asanoyama is always strong and solid but his losses are always predictable, he can't seem to cut through the top echelon, in the big fights he isn't finding that next gear, although he has had an impressive start against two strong opponents, we'll see.

Fantastic grit from Hokutofuji today. and against a guy like Kirishima.
that makes two ozeki in a row he beat, after Hoshoryu yesterday.
and hoshoryu seems to be off. dude, don't be another kadoban ozeki

Nephew looked shook the whole way.

Hokutofuji LOCKED IN.

Shaping to be anyone’s Yusho.

Unless he makes a huge blunder Takerufuji is winning the yusho in Makushita. The guy walks through everyone he faces and only ever loses when he gets overconfident. Put him in Juryo and we'll see how good he really is.

Onosato looking good so far in Juryo.

My boy Atamifuji is back with a vengeance.

Tree stands up, gets pushed straight out.

Kinbozan looking on point so far.

Waka bro is on the board!

Hoshoryu, what was that.

Hoshoryu so happy he made ozeki he's now losing to Shodai.
i hope uncle gives him a call and screams at him for a few minutes.
Nephew really was too aggressive against Shodai. He was angry out there you can tell he wants to win. Big Baby Shodai just was patient and let Nephew beat himself.

I found myself rooting for Hokutofuji against my boy but happy Daieisho actually put some Hakkeyoi into it today.

It’s still anyone’s Yusho right now. Bowling ball beating Asanoyama derailed that one and Kirishima lost a very winnable match.

Tobizaru lost too in a winnable match.

Yusho winner might only have 10 wins.

Does Harumafuji have the lowest winning score? He had 11 - 4 with a playoff in Aki 2017
I thought Asanoyama won in January with 11? Maybe it was 12. All the top guys have 2 with only Hokutofuji having 1. If he won today I would have bet on him.

12 - 3 in 2019

12 - 3 seems to be the going score for non Yokozuna. Teru is falling apart every time he wakes up but managed a 14 - 1 in his last win. Hakuho who was on his last legs got a zensho-yusho
These are the clear cut reasons why nobody is likely to be a Yokozuna any time soon.

Sorry nephew you all are too inconsistent and you're gonna force cyborg Teru to stick around

Edit- Jan was Keisho with 12 - 3 a jun-yusho and a yusho and just not enough

Keisho was weak in that win. Than the injuries. He will never get there. Nephew needs to get his act together and he will have a shot. Hakuoho — injuries again. Ugh.

I wonder sometimes about the amount of competing they have to do per year. I know at one point like 100 years ago almost they had 4 basho a year and briefly 3. I understand at this time Japan had some other things going on some more pressing matters. Is there any harm outside of tradition in dropping 1 basho a year even 2?
The amount of injuries that could be reduced if these guys had some extra rest time. I know they won't but like 4 a year seems like it would only benefit sumo as a whole.
