Once again I've been caught unprepared for the start of this sumo tournament, so I'm making a quick thread after the first day has finished here.

Really looking forward to this, and I should be able to finally see some sumo in person near the end of the tournament.

Anyway, here's a quick look at the rankings for this tournament held in Osaka:

Some quick things to be aware of for this tournament. There are two guys making their debuts this time around, Daishomaru and Akiseyama, both from Nihon University's sumo program. Lackluster Ichinojo is competing all the way down at M11 after looking so good for a while, then showing a disappointing lack of "fighting spirit" on the dohyo. I really hope he can pull it together, because he doesn't belong way down there. Much higher up the rankings, Toyonoshima jumped way up, going from M7 to Sekiwake after getting the jun-yusho last tournament. It's always fun to see him against the top guys, and he can definitely put up some big upsets.

Two Ozeki are kadoban this time, facing demotion if they don't get winning records. Goeido had an abysmal tournament last time, so hopefully he can do much, much better this time. and Terunofuji has been struggling with an injury for quite a while now, so hopefully it just won't affect him too much and he'll be able to put up a good fight as he definitely has the skills and physicality to belong in the Ozeki ranks.

All eyes will be on Kotoshogiku for sure, after winning his first tournament last time and being the first Japanese yusho winner in however long probably brings with it a lot of pressure. He's struggled to deal with pressure in the past, so we'll have to see how he does this time.

So there we go!

Stay tuned to Kintamayama's YouTube Channel for daily highlights of the top division.

And as usual, for anyone who'll be watching the sport for the first time, please feel free to ask any questions you might have here and someone will try to answer them. Also be sure to check out my Introduction to SUMO thread for a brief (although slightly outdated at this point) overview of the sport.

You are in Osaka?

The Sumo is a fantastic day out, glad you're getting to see it live. Bring your own snacks and drinks!

This has been a great tournament so far! A lot of guys are really bringing it, puttingg on great matches.. I think anyone could win. Who are y'all's picks? Kisenosato is unbeaten and has looked really good. Everyone else is runner up with 1 loss.

You know, I've watched nearly every tournament on kintamayama's channel for the past two or three years, and this is probably the most enjoyable and entertaining one I've seen.

Osunaarashi is currenty 8-0 with a win over Endo today in juryo. On FB he said his goal is a juryo championship. Looks like he might make good on that, and with an undefeated record to boot!

I'm surprised he was dropped from the top division after sitting out last tournament with the knee surgery. I would have figured he was high enough ranked to keep his place. It's probably better off this way since sumo love more than anything to throw guys to the wolves.
