Strength in Interesting Places

This is for Calvus, other fans of world music, and anyone who just likes awesome things:

Most "liked" video on YouTube, apparently. Which is both bizarre, and yet totally rational at the same time (just like me).

It is pretty funny. And hot korean girls are always a big plus.

I've been hearing about it, but that was the first time I seen it.

I can't remember if this is something that was already talked about, but have you ever tried pulling sumo?

You've got a cool job man. I'm hopefully headed down that road. I'm working on a degree in the realm of management control in non-profits, but I'm already painfully aware of the broader implications for the greatest mis-managed fiscal houses (governments). Your enthusiasm is great, as it's often regarded as a Labour of Sisyphus.

Sumo?

What are you going to do next, tell him to stop.curling and wear shirts with sleeves.

Hmmm, actually, no. I probably should. I have a strong feeling that while my back can handle squatting, but conventional deadlifting is a lot harder.

I'm not suggesting you necessarily give up on conventional. But if you try Sumo, and like it / can pull around the same or more weight with it, it's another "tool" to work with. And your mobility is generally pretty good, so that should be less of a hurdle than usual.

For example, alternating Sumo and Conventional, or doing a block with one, and then the other, so that your back can have a bit of a rest from conventional deadlifts some of the time. Or using Sumo for the heavier work, and lighter conventional, or conventional deficit deads as a supplemental exercise.

Sadly, it does seem to be, on aggregate, a labour of Sisyphus: if you read the empirical literature on aid effectiveness, generally they can't find a correlation between aid spending and the intended outcome (usually economic growth). Sometimes they find these conditional effects, like "aid + good governance -> economic growth" but often they can't replicate those. And at any rate, just about the strongest line of investigation seems to suggest that good governance on its own is sufficient for economic growth. At the micro-level, though, it does seem to be possible to improve things, and I hope that some of the work I do falls into that category.

Do you want to get into international development? I'd be happy to share tips about career planning and career paths and so on. PM me if you'd like.

Yes, I would probably want to keep conventional in some way, as I do really enjoy it. Can you recommend any instructionals on pulling Sumo? It seems that quite a few of the ones out there are wrong.

Just doing a quick search leads me to this. It's not extensive, but if you follow the instructions (and do the obvious stuff, like get tight, keep the back neutral, pull the slack out of the bar) you should do alright.

I'd just add that you don't need to use a super wide stance, and that you can play around with stance width. Also, sometimes when people first try sumo, they "forget" where to grip the bar and have them too wide or too narrow. So keep them straight down, below the shoulders as usual.

There's this video too, although there's a bunch of noise in the background, which makes it hard to hear everything.

In both those videos the "stars" had sleeves. Therefore rendering what ever they had.mute. As everyone.knows that true athletic greatness can not.and should not be attempted while wearing.sleeves.

I Am Gym: And You Can Too!

1. Some SMR on my traps and spinal erectors with a baseball
2. 45-50 minute slow treadmill jog
3. "50/20" assistance missed from yesterday: curls w/ bar + 20kg; GMS 35kgs, 50 reps of each in 16:30.

Wore a sleeveless shirt. Biceps got a good pump from the curls.

Curling while rocking the sleeveless shirt? You won't be single for long.

It could actually be a problem. I'd kind of like to stay single for the next, let's say, foreseeable future. Although I am anticipate being available for very short-term engagements of, let's say, 12 minutes (yep, I'm talking about doing it twice). So I'll probably need to cover up the Gunz if there are any nice girls around, and only go sleeveless if, say, I am in New Zealand, investigating KiwiTricker's skanks.

8 min rest between sets? Does Rippletoe advise that?

Any fans of the West Wing out there? If so, you'll like this:

Shocking to see how old and fat Bradley Whitford (the actor who plays Josh) got. I wouldn't recognize him if it wasn't for the voice. Most of the other actors look very similar if not actually completely identical.

And since I am reminiscing about the West Wing, here's one of the best moments from the show...
