Strength in Interesting Places

The new jaunty!

I've had blood sausage when I've gone to see my uncle in Dundee. He makes it for breakfast all the time, although he always calls it "black pudding". So at first I didn't know quite what I was eating, although now that I do know, I can't say I care. It's good stuff, but I don't recall ever seeing it for sale in Canada. I'd probably have to go to a speciality butcher if I wanted any.

Black pudding, or blood pudding, is a very common dish in Sweden. I love it, expecially if it's served with bacon, grated carrots and of course lingonberry jam. Yum! Like this:

You're all welcome to my house, guys - I'll cook up a batch in a jiffy!

Same in norway, blood sausage is widely popular. Even saw blood pancakes

Blood/black pudding is awesome. When I was in Ireland we had an Irish breakfast every day which always included black and white pudding. It tastes a lot like liverwurst, the black has a bit more spice than the white.

Notes
Good workout overall:
- Went through the OHPs very quickly, especially the singles, which I did with just 5-10 seconds break between each. With the power cleans to rack, it made these quite tiring.
- Because I missed a week, I repeated week 1 of my current phase of 5/3/1 deadlift. Technique-wise, I narrowed my stance a tiny bit and I liked the result. Seriously tired after the AMRAP set.
- Increased the weight on the lying tricep extensions by 2kg, did an extra rep on the GHRs. The GHRs are still assisted, but slowly and and surely I am getting better at them. I feel like I should change my assistance to front squats or good mornings at some point, but not yet.

Life brings many changes. As circumstances changes and we accumulate experience, inevitably we grow and respond to our environments. Over time, we can become quite different people from those that we once were. Such is life, and the capacity to change is one of the fundamental characteristics that define us. But however much we change, it is important to remember what makes us who we are. We should never forget our roots- where we come from. We should be proud of our roots, and we should share them with others from time to time.

And so, with that in mind, here's some pictures of hot asian girls:

I found this speech quite moving and the following photos were exceptionally relevant. Thank you for your insight as always, Jaunty!

Oh and I'm way late to the party but congratulations on your squat and curl PRs. Very nice work!

Black pudding is my absolute favourite, had it for breakfast this morning, with sausages, bacon and eggs and will be doing the same tomorrow morning.

Best not to investigate the ingredients too much..(same goes for haggis) but it's delicious!

edit: oh yeah - hi Jaunty! howz it going?

the AMRAP deads look really tough! nice!

how long you in Kabul ere you move on?

Going well thanks. Life is pretty good at the moment- I have a pretty good work schedule, with a lot of time at home until after Christmas. Just got back from a little beach holiday, which was nice. My current project lasts until May of next year, I don't know if it will be extended or not. My company is saying that work will probably turn up in Pakistan next, but I'd also like to go back to Juba (Southern Sudan) for a short project if I can.

On the lifting side of things, my squats are actually going up for the first time since December last year and I have found a programme that I really enjoy.

It's something that has been available to me many times, probably even served on my plate- can't remember where, but probably various 'greasy spoon' cafes in the UK. But I never tried it. Haggis, though, I have tried, on Burns Night when I was at school in Scotland. Hard to avoid under those circumstances.

Thanks! I figure that as long as your squats (and curls of course) are going up, what is there to worry about?

Goals Update!

One of my goals from the first page of my log is to hit intermediate in the weightlifting performance standards for all the lifts that I do. The standards themselves are rather undemanding, but that is the target that I set myself. Anyway, I haven't really been monitoring this target, but I realized today that because I have gained significantly in my squat, and managed to more or less preserve my strength in my other lifts while losing a lot of weight (lost about 15lbs since Christmas) I am actually extremely close to achieving this target.

Right now I am 83kg, but I am losing weight and will hit 82kg in a few weeks. So here is my progress.

* * * * * * * *
Squat
82kg target: 122.5kg
Current PR: 120kg (last week)
Result: Felt like I had more in me when I got my PR last week. Will hit this next time I for a squat 1RM. Do this month.

Deadlift
82kg target: 142.5kg
Current PR: 150kg (May)
Note: I am somewhat lighter now than when I hit this, but I am sure I could easily pull 142.5kg right now. Do this month.

Bench
82kg target: 90kg
Current PR: 93kg (April)
Note: Pressed 90kg for a single last week. Target achieved.

Press
82kg target: 57.5kg
Current PR: 65kg (May)
Note: Somewhat lighter now than when I got the PR, but press 60kg easily last month. Target achieved.
* * * * * * * *

So, basically, press and bench done. DL is arguably done, but I will pull 142.5 (maybe next week) just to be clear. Squat I am sure I can do, and could have done last week, but I will probably do at the end of the month.

Going to feel good to achieve this target.

Notes
A very satisfying workout.
- Squats were fine. Not too heavy. Took a video, depth was okay. Not expecting any problem adding weight next 3s day. T3 and GHRs as assistance seem to be delivering the goods.
- Decided to tweak my weights for bench. The way I had them before, the weights between the sets were very similar. So I kept my top set about the same (actually it felt a tiny bit light), and then to decrease the weight from the top set more than I was before (around 3kg per time). When adding weight in the future, I will try to do it in a way that doesn't lead to the sets being too similar. I think that by doing some of my sets a little lighter, it gives me the opportunity to reinforce good form and work on speed a bit more. Let's see. TBH, with the progress I am making in my squat I don't really mind if my bench goes up right now.
- Inverted rows were very easy today. Probably need to add weight to them in future.
- Didn't do any assistance. Thought I'd get some extra recovery instead, especially as my triceps were a little sore today from starting lying tricep extensions this week, and my legs were a little sore from my AMRAP set of deadlifts.

Congrats on the weight loss. Also on being so close to hitting all four targets. I'm sure that when this goal is properly dominated and shown who its daddy is, an entire page of eye candy of the highest tier will be in order.

You show a keen sense of propriety: a whole page of top-level eye candy will most definitely be warranted when I make those goals my bitch. And that's a whole page for people who have Sherdog set to 30 posts per page.

Congrats on hitting those goals. It's always a satisfying feeling to be able to tick things off the ol' to do list.
