Strength in Interesting Places

i too squat with a bench so i feel your pain, although mine is a none adjustable one...i pretty much do a good morning & then walk back away from the bench to squat, works fine until you fail!

That would suck! Although I guess you must have really strong Good Mornings.

Yep. Bad angle, but it does look like some noticable back rounding on the deadlifts.

Time to concentrate on keeping your hips low before you really do hurt yourself. :)

Hopefully it is just a matter of concentration. I might figure out some sort of drill to practice flattening my back out in the start position, or just do a bunch of light and mid-weight ones and really concentrate on the back on every one.

Dammit that vid gave me the shivers...death...lift...creepy
I wonder what makes you take such a risk man.

It is probably because I am hepped up on a lethal combo of eggs, almonds, milk, whey and whole food multivitamins. It's got me out of mind, on a crazy trail of self-destruction.

Haha, on a serious note, the plates you use look smaller than the average olympic ones. In that case you would have a bigger ROM, hence more back rounding.

Ref the Deadlift video, i do concur about some noticable back-rounding.

What i would suggest just for starters, and mind you im no deathlift expert is if you are using smaller than olympic size weights, put a plate underneath on each side to elevate the starting position, or atleast remove your shoes, that gives you a good 1-2 cm less rom alone.

Also try thinking about puffing your chest out when you are in the starting position, that will automaticly put your back in a concave line and not a convex one.

if you make sure the bar is at the center of the totalt length of your foot, then grab it (at this time you will have back rounding) Then make your chins touch the bar by bending your knees. Now if you puff your chest up, that will automaticly set you (and your back) in the right starting position.

Other than that, have a great weekend and keep lifting ;)

I will come live in thailand and teach you the ways of the grappler

Appreciate all the guidance. I will try the setup and the shoes.

That being said, I am pretty sure I can straighten my back even with the smaller plates- yoga flexibility and wotnot. Sometimes when I deathlift I do it side on to a mirror and I take a peak at my lumbar area before I pull, and I think I get the right position then. That's why I think the setup/cue is the most important thing, as once you're down into that position and your lumbar region is curved, it is not especially easy to straighten it again. So I will experiment with your setup and cues, and see if I can find others that work for me.

And sadly, no weekend for me- Saturday and Sunday are normal working days in Afghanistan. It'll be 13 working days without a day off for me, running up to next Thursay. :icon_cry2

This is true. But I will de-reound my back, longer ROM or no! :icon_twis (Hopefully this is not just the whey and whole-food multi-vitamins making me talk crazy.)

Weights in my gym = free deficit deadlifts.

When I go back to Thailand I have regular sized weights and they come off the floor really nicely.

Well, doing what amounts to deficit deadlifts for all of your work sets will certainly make it harder to keep your back from rounding. In other words, don't beat yourself up too much about it.

I liked the Dr. who music. I have nothing else to add.

I am glad that you identified and appreciated the selection.

That version is by one of my favourite ever bands, Orbital. Plus, when I was about 2 years old, which I guess was in 1975, I was absolutely terrified of the original show. As soon as it came on, and I heard the music, I used to run out of the room and go and hide under my bed, and I would cower there until the music had finished. At which point for some reason I wouldn't be scared any more.

So for these reasons the music has a lot of meaning for me!

Being told this by someone like you (strong, knowledgeable) is helpful, thanks.

But I still aim to flatten that back out. If I can't do it, I will be demanding my money back from the 7 or so years of yoga I've done. Sadly, this amounts to probably less than $100, but I will still demand it back!

Agreed. You should continue to work on it. I wish we could get a side-view, however, because a lot of it looks like thoracic spine rounding, at least to me.

I'll take a video from side view some time over the next week.

And yes, I see what you mean. It does like there is rounding in the thoracic area. Weird.

ORBITAL! One of my all time favorites. I have seen them twice live... once in Chicago around 2000 and last year at the Winter Music Conference in Miami. One of the best live performances I have ever seen.

Damn.... I am now massively jealous. Their live shows are reputed to be balls-to-the-wall awesome.

Now that you seem to have a plan for some BJJ, I am seriously envious of your life. Seriously.
