Sterling putting himself in the position is irrelevant. Yan was in direct communication with his corner when it happened. He asked his corner whether to throw the knee or not. I believe one cornerman said yes and the other said no. The ref warned him Sterling was a downed opponent multiple times also, but yes. That might be a language barrier issue, but with his own corner there certainly wasn't one.
Not to mention that knee is not a one off or an isolated issue. Yan has a history of being a very dirty fighter. Dating back to before his UFC days even. The Sterling fight isn't even Yan's only loss due to an intentional foul, it's his 2nd.
No. He was actually told to punch by one cornerman and then there is a disagreement on the translation for the other.
The other one either said kick then changed it to "hit" or similar. It apparently doesn't translate across very well within the Russian language.
Here is what Yan said about it and he said he didn't hear his corner.

“Honestly, I didn’t understand what my cornermen were telling me,” he said later. “I was focused on his hands leaving the ground. The replay will likely show how he raised his hands. I didn’t see that his knees were down, I thought he was squatting.”
Yan doesn't have any other DQ losses listed on his record. He has had a point taken off in the last 2 seconds of Magomedov magomedov 1 for this...
Nothing dirty about it at all. Both fighters were coming in all fight in the exact same way.
