Stolen Valor question

Is it actually illegal or is it just disrespectful?
Also, if you're former military, do you always carry your military ID? Seems like that would be a quick way to prove that you are who you say you are.
i carry my id eveywhere i go. youd be surprised how many times ive gotten out of a ticket because i flashed that first before my license.

you know what, I'm gonna leave this one alone. Stolen Valor is pretty fucking pathetic.

I was in the army for six years and got out six years ago. I've seen some of those videos (not the chilis one) and they do piss me off. There was one of a fat guy walking his dog with only a dress blue top with a trillion different medals and ribbons, and he was bragging that he was going to get free starbucks. The thing about these people stealing valor is that they don't do the research. They don't realize that just about your whole military career, your uniform standard and military appearance is paramount in everything you do. It's a pride thing. They don't have pride and it's obvious.

LMAO.... that video was a setup, it was made to show how silly and stupid the stolen valor guys can be. When I first saw that I was thinking "this can't be real, no way in hell" and sure enough, it was just a joke made by some active-duty soldiers for a laugh.

Stolen valor idiots are pretty easy to spot : they always forget things, like they can't remember the name of their drill instructor, their platoon sergeant or platoon commander, all kinds of silly shit. My favorite was that idiot guy at the laundromat who was a GunnerySergeant and a Colonel at the same time. Apparently the CIA and DIA kept calling him back for more service... he made E-7 in his first enlistment... was wearing a USMC long sleeve dress... fucking insanely stuipd.

Pretty sure people in those uniforms were fighting for your right to wear whatever the fuck you want. Imo it's only stolen valor if you're actively trying to impersonate military for personal gains.

I can see that, but if you're wearing medals then I have an issue. Especially the purple heart... seen a few of those before and it's infuriating. \

I hate weasels. In all likelihood the guy faking the full uniform is trying to weasel something under the guise of something they didn't earn.

However if you wish to wear part of a uniform in show of support or in appreciation of the style, be my guest. Although, the peacoat aside, you'd look pretty silly wearing any part of the Navy dress blues by themselves.

Fatigues or other surplus type stuff shouldn't be a problem. I have a Marine t-shirt that my father-in-law (Marine vet, Korea) gave me. I have no problem wearing it and have (including in the company of Marines). I don't think anyone has ever been confused except for one nice old lady thank me for my service once, so I just clarified.

I used to watch Don Shipley videos, he seems like a cool guy but you can tell he loves the attention too. In a way it's kind of sad, you can tell some of those guys he spoke have some mental issue going on.

we had the marine peacoat while i was on I&I. i would have given a left nut to take one from my 1stsgt's office. shit was nice and warm as fuck. all i would have to do was replace the anondized ega buttons

During the years I was enlisted the Navy issue peacoat still came with the silver buttons. That thing was sweet. Later they switched the buttons over to this plastic bullshit. I left the silver ones on mine. Of course there was no danger of getting called on that since I was stationed out of Pearl Harbor.

I would have continued to use it after my service but I had put on about 40 pounds of muscle during those years. I was barely 115 lbs when I joined. What was the military thinking?

I don't mind people wearing camos. It hasn't been in a military uniform for about 10 years or so, pending branch. Now when it's the full uniform such as the digital shit, dress greens/blues, and such, I start questioning. If anyone should question me, I always have my VA card and can recall my DS, my unit, and MOS without issues.

I've cut guys some slack if they could prove they were military. My way of saying thank you.

Never ran into fake while I was in or as a veteran. And no, wearing military pants isn't even close. Full uniform with medals and ribbons will get you there though.

The funny part is most of these idiots have medals and ribbons on that either completely contradict one another or that very limited people have earned. Plus they wear them like shit.

I encountered a guy who, at the height of the Iraq War, would hang out at the bus stops downtown. He was talking about how we were kicking ass over there, and that he wasn't there because he had a bum leg or some shit. Dude wore a Marines uniform, and a Navy hat.

I had a lady stop and thank me for my service once and literally had no idea what she was talking about. I thought she was glad I was cleaning my yard.
You blew it, bro. she wanted to ride the d train.

Not stolen valor, but the bus scene from Jar Head is always difficult for me to watch.

You know that guy has seen things.

I personally don't care if a guy dresses as a service member. If the guy wants to be a jack ass and impersonate a soldier, let him make a fool out of himself. Stolen valor guy never know Army regulation and easily make mistakes that gives them away. For example; flag on right shoulder, name tapes and us army tape on wrong sides, and fat bodies with ranger tabs, and SF tabs.

I'll go as far as to call them out to their face, but I'm not going to make a scene and record it. I feel like that's a cry for attention from both parties. Just correct the issue, tell him how much of a fool he's making himself out to be, and carry on.

That's just me, though. I'm just a "don't give a fuck" kind of guy.

This can here got exposed quick.
