Stipe gonna make Jones go sleepy

Thanks for chiming in with even more details. I've seen the footage of the BJJ match you mention, and it's crazy how much Stipe big-brothered his opponent yet came out the "loser." Is it even available to watch anymore? I wonder if Jones' camp has no access to it and can only go by that big L on Tapology. Being a demon on tape study like Jon has the rep for doesn't help you much when there's precious little tape to parse.

Of course there's the defense of Overeem guillotine to dissect—but 99.99% of the fans and pundits didn't come away from it with an admiration of Stipe's craft. No, it was all lamenting that Overeem had went for it in the first place. If only he had gone for the ground and pound! Even the few who grudgingly admitted that Overeem had had considerable success with the move before would go on to surmise that he hadn't tried it for so long that he was too rusty, or that his body shape had changed too much in the interim for it to work the way it once did. A few tut-tutted Overeem for not getting both hooks in. Um, hello? HE TRIED TO but Stipe was moving sideways away so fast that he couldn't get the second leg over!

Sigh. Always, always they explain away anything Stipe does well as the fault of his opponent. It's frustrating for a Stipe fan. But I comfort myself by considering how advantageous it can be to be underestimated...especially if it's your opponent doing it.

I remember watching it years ago, but I don't know of any proper source for the video that isn't hidden behind a paywall or registration requirement. I found one bootleg video hosted on a Russian site that was filmed on someone's phone I'll provide if you want... it's not much but it seems to contain the whole match lol. But yeah, "big-brother" is definitely a good term for what happened there. Stipe's opponent, Aaron Howard, was 240 pounds, a serving police officer, and a Purple Belt under Carlson Gracie. Howard had a previous BJJ win on a Fight2Win card against a pretty legit regional-level guy in Anthony Santiago (a dude who had also dabbled in MMA years prior and submitted his opponent in each of his wins).

Yeah, lots of people like to dismiss Overeem's guillotine and give him shit for attempting it without realizing that there's a reason he went for it: because it's been so successful for him many times throughout his career. Club-and-sub is a very legitimate tactic in MMA and frankly how often do we see the fanbase tearing fighters apart for going for flurries against the fence or on the mat instead of fishing for a sub when strikes fail to get their opponent out of there? As much as people may want to say Overeem's guillotine wasn't the same now that he wasn't juiced or because he wasn't fighting shorter men or whatever, when watching the tape I think it's also pretty clear that Stipe was showing solid composure and sound defense in that spot to stay alive. A lot of Heavyweights would have been finished there.

I guess we'll see if Jones fares better on the mats and if Stipe has been staying "current".

Stylistically I think it’s a tough fight for Jon but Stipe is coming off a long lay off and brutal KO and is battle worn. It’s not impossible, but unlikely.

Please God Stipe put an end to this

I think Jones will figure out a way to get it done. His team, his scientists, his training, his mindset, the game planning, it's all going to come together. He's motivated, he's training with Gordon Ryan, there's too much on the line, and Jones isn't the Jones that's going to be doing coke the night before. Not for this fight, not at this time in his life. I think Jones gets it done. He's younger too, he's been training with the HWs, he's acclimated, his team is too smart to go in there to lose. With that said, I absolutely wouldn't mind at all seeing Stipe have his way. Pushing him around, landing great power shots, being resilient as fuck, bringing Jones into deep HW man waters. that would also be awesome to see. Either way, I think it's going to be a tough fight, I think Jones will face way more adversity than the once in a life time Gane brought, and we will see Jones in some sort of trouble in the fight. But I think Jones will pull through. Going to be a good fight, for sure.

I have no idea about Stipes condition, long time ago since his last fight.
But if he manages to have the same form how he was in his last fight, all I can say is ; Jones is fu….ed

Very unlikely.

Jones has a good chin and is more skilled everywhere other than boxing.

40 is too old I'm sorry.

He was on a downside 2-3 years ago.

It would be the most amazing thing in MMA history. Won't happen. Jones waited until Stipe's engine had 400k miles on it. Miocic is the HW GOAT no matter what but he won't win this

I’m honestly surprised at how many ppl are completely writing off Stipe. Ya, he’s out of his prime. But Jones looked like absolute shit in his last several outings at LHW. His performance against Gane was impressive. But very quick. Who knows how he actually looks at HW.

I don't think the Stipe who fought DC in their second fight beats Jones, let alone whatever version exists today. He was sloppy as fuck, getting outstruck by DC for 3 rounds until he finally figured out midfight that body punches were a weakness.

2023 has been absolutely bonkers. After seeing O’Malley wreck Aljo and the other Sean truck Izzy, seeing Stipe faceplant Jon would only seem proper.
That would break the theme of the UFC getting their perfect marketing manufactured storylines though. The UFC would much prefer Jon winning, both guys retiring, and then running a few different HW fights to determine a new champion than they would a 40 something champ with no charisma that fights once every few years.

if stipe survives the first 2 minutes he could be in a good position
