Still can't believe Forrest was the Champ

He was supposed to fight Machida before Shogun that year but one of them got a nasty staph infection. And I believe Shogun was coming off knee surgery.

Good chance that would have derailed Forrest's career a lot. He was coming off a TKO loss against Jardine and Machida most likely beats him. 2 losses in a row means no Shogun fight and hence might never have gotten to that belt or win it(his career fell off pretty quick after he won the belt)

Match making is everything.

all of the top fighters get hot at one time or another, and forrest was on fire for a little while. it didnt last very long

I think he had alot of injuries. He said at the time of his retirement he lost alot of mobility in his arms. He was all fucked up.

He said he can barely brush his teeth with one of his arms.

I think everyone underestimated Forrest.

He beat Shogun and Rampage back to back, when Shogun was the best LHW.

He had great kicks, great cardio, underrated TDD.

He just found ways to win when the odds were stacked against him.

Shogun was badly injured before that fight, when he wasn’t he showed Griffin whats up.

Jan has only beat 2 guys out of the current top 10 and the one is a fringe top 10 (Krylov). I think it was more timing. Because Jan loses to like 6 or 7 guys of the current top 10. 100% timing the Anderson win made him leapfrog like 7 guys for some reason.

Jan is only champ because Jon vacated. He never beat the #1, he didn't beat the champ. Saying he loses to anyone he hasn't fought is speculation. I agree with "timing" being a factor, but again, it's only because Jones vacated.

healthier Shogun mopped the floor with Forrest ……..But I give Forrest full credit for his win in first fight , he fought his ass off that night

Forrest was injured in the second fight. Shogun fans always seem to dismiss that. They're 1-1 with a finish over each other. The first fight counts, boys, no excuses.

It obviously counts lol

He’s won 9 of 10 fights. He’s beaten cannonier, krylov, rockhold, jacare, anderson, reyes and izzy. You may think he’d lose to 6 or 7 of the top 10 but that is a reflection of the top 10 being better than most give credit for. And it doesn’t mean he actually would lose to them either. Again, he’s pretty freakin good and the izzy fight certainly showed a high level of fighting. Consider how Forrest looked against silva and then how Jan looked against izzy…..

Forrest didnt suck, he just fell off extremely hard after the embarrassing Anderson loss.

People forget that he was also fairly easily outpointing Rashad in their fight until he got caught with a big bomb in the third round

Flyweight, bantamweight, featherweight, lightweight, welterweight, light heavyweight all have illegitimate champions then I guess…….

Forrest didn’t suck, but people want to put that era on a pedestal compared to today and it’s nonsense.

Agree and disagree. I'm not saying they're "illegitimate", I'm saying they're champs due to circumstance. It stemmed from people shitting on Forrest and glorifying both DC and Jan. Forrest has a better claim to legitimacy due to the fact that he beat the #1 guy - twice - beat the unified champ, and the others didn't. Even Jan has a better claim than DC, because Jones is supposedly moving up, and is no longer ranked at LHW. DC was #2 while champ, even after defending.

The other champs didn't technically beat the champ, but the champ retired or changed weightclasses, which makes them #1 by default - circumstance.

No one is saying Forrest wasn’t “legitimate”. Bisping beat the champ too. So did Serra. It’s a great accomplishment. They were “legitimate” champs. But that doesn’t make them greater than dc, or jan or oliviera (we’ll see what happens with him) etc.

He still beat the #1 in his division twice, which is more than those guys can say, and is a greater accomplishment. Forrest beat Rampage right after he unified the PRIDE and UFC 205 titles. DC has a greater career overall, agreed, but Forrest has achieved more in the 205 division: being ranked #1 and holding two wins over previous #1's.

It definitely was, but the fact that Shogun was once again coming off of knee surgery put a dent in his performance. I was still shocked and Forrest should get nothing but respect for how he won that fight.

Shogun had surgery after the first Forrest fight, not before.
