The joke isn't that clever. Everyone gets it, its just more vulgar than it is funny and YT has decided its vulgar enough to preclude him from monetization.
Wouldn't it protect YT from any potential issues if they left content alone and let people decide to view content or not?

If he removes the links for his shirts they will monetize him again. It's not about his language its the shirts.

It's not about the shirts or anything, really. People placed pressured on youtube, youtube ceded and found something to pin their sudden actions on (the shirts) even though they had never been bothered by it previously.
