News Stephan Bonnar passed away (RIP)

From what we've seen from Bonnar over the past few years, I don't know why anybody is feigning shock right now.

Screw your feelings, when you see one of your friends struggling, step in.

because nobody knew how bad he was that's why they're shocked. just because someone is an addict doesn't mean you expect them to die right away. there's plenty of addicts who live long lives.

Rest in Power to the American Psycho. the man was an absolute gladiator in his time.

i never understood when people say so and so is in a better place. Is that a christian thimg?

good point, not religious. very anti-religion.

meant his CTE, drinking, and behavior were a bad place.
felt restless. troubled. too far gone.
There is something peaceful about passing on.
Maybe that is the better. Not an actual place.

(could spill over into a discussion about how all energy in the universe is not created or destroyed, laws of thermal dynamics, life cycles, weather, orbitals, asteroids, chemistry, brine, phytoplankton, the eye and the brain... but this isn't that conversation)

A sense of catharsis ...
for both Stephan, and the people left behind.
Thinking back to Dave Duerson (among others)
donating their brain to science because they expressed suffering.
Uncontrollable, unfixable.

The thing about death, we are all due on that debt.

Being around those living in unfixable suffering,
puts "death" and "life" into perspective.
Stephan had a good go of it.
In the end, he wasn't really living... just slowly dying.
Will try to remember his good memories and less of his bad ones.

Hopefully that put perspective on better place.
It's not suitable nomenclature, never been comfortable with Rest in Peace.
Yet, not religious.

Fuck, he looked like he was getting healthier in the past few months, Bonnar was always a favourite of mine, hilarious and always came to fight. RIP

I've wondered if there was some kind of falling out. He was a legend, good looking, well spoken, funny, good at WEC commentary, supposedly had Dana's loyalty like all of the TUF 1 guys, etc. Seemed ideal for commentary or at least one of the pre/post show desk jobs.

Yes I agree, I thought Bonnar was lined up to be the face of the UFC in retirement in front of the camera, have a Podcast like Steve Austin, host an MMA show, travel the world calling fights, that's where I thought his retirement was going.
Shit they gave Forrest a job with the UFC after he retired, but not Bonnar,....

I wonder if Forrest tried to help, they seemed genuinely close. Bonnar even named his son Griffin.

If Forrest didnt do anything, he probably feels like shit right now.

Terrible news. I hate seeing someone my age pass away. He was only two years older then me. RIP

It's alarming to say the least. Makes you think about things and what's really important

Excellent post sir, one to contemplate , we all know that don't happen often.

Thanks for that my friend.
Much love to you and your family.

Yeah, he was doing commentary at High Rollerz a few months ago and looked like he'd gotten his shit together.

RIP

In April Bonnar lost his house in a fire
"A subsequent fundraiser raised over $10,000 for the retired fighter, who was able to move into a new residence thanks in part to a generous donation from former UFC welterweight champ Tyron Woodley." - big ups to Woodley

I am guessing that if his untimely death is due to heart issues those are a result of drug (ETOH) abuse - he was definitely going off the rails towards the end.

RIP to a true just bleed warrior. The JBG will definitely reserve a place for Stephan Bonnar.

Some goof already in my DMs online saying “it’s from the shot”
Fucking clowns man, wish I could reach thru the screen sometimes lol

AFAIK Stephan was anti-vaxx and everything else covid related anyway.

I think it had to be some kind of falling out. He was certainly more fitting in terms of status than Paul Felder, Anthony Smith, Din Thomas, Alan Jouban, and many others that I see doing those jobs.
