Navigating menus is shit by the way. Menus to equip and unequip, to scan planets, to go here and there, to land and take off, and to deal with constant encumberment. A lot of my time was spent in the inventory screen and the galaxy map, and it got tiresome quickly. Am I screwing up? Can I just set a route and go like in Elite Dangerous?
.
You can point and go, which is more immersive.
In space, when you're already on a mission, or the next one in the queue replaces a completed one, and you can see the blue icon showing you where to go, you just have to pull up your scanner.
Hover your reticule over the destination and you'll see brief details of the mission, just as on a planet.. You then can click your interact button (E key on pc). Your ship will automatically head off in that direction with a quick cut scene without having to pull up a menu.
I found the menu swapping really pulled me out of the game. Sometimes I just want to instantly travel to the surface of planet ive already visted, so it's nice to have options.
What's cool, for potential mods, is that you can manually fly from one planet/moon in a system to another. Someone flew from Titan (I think) to Pluto, but it took around 7 hours. You can't interact with the planet you arrive at though, as you'll just fly through it.
I'm sure a mod can fix this for those of us wanting a more Elite Dangerous vibe.
Perhaps a new type of engine can be bought that cuts the travel time significantly, without making it instantaneous. This would allow you to walk around your ship while it travels so you can mess with different systems, like research, crafting etc... We need that Star Wars battle chess!
