I have a very hard time believing that the emotional investment some fans have in the series is not coloring their vision.

I have a friend--long-time, die-hard Star Wars fan--and this is his conclusion as well.

He gave the film an 8/10.

This is all so unbelievable. I am without belief. I am incapable of belief.

I dont hate this movie, but i didnt hate Crystal Skull either.

This shit reminds me of that.

I liked the movie, but i agree with Hamill. Luke would've taken responsibility for his failure and tried to stop kylo the way obi wan did with Anakin.

I would've made kylo more powerful than Luke, so Luke goes into exile to study the ancient jedi texts and train himself to become strong enough to stop kylo. And when Rey arrives on the island, Luke still doesn't feel strong enough, but rey convinces him that he can't wait any longer. So Luke agrees to go fight kylo, knowing full well that he'll likely die. So he gives rey a few days worth of training, and gives her the Jedi texts, so that if he dies, she can continue to study on her own and grow stronger, since she would then be the last hope to defeat kylo.

Then have an epic fight between Luke and kylo, where luke loses, but gives the resistance time to get away. At the end of the fight he becomes one with the force.

That's super generic and basically a rip off of A New Hope.

I don't hate his idea.

I myself had an idea where instead of the low-speed pursuit -- the Republic was forced to do evasive maneuvers ino the LARGEST ASTEROID FIELD EVER (recycle CGI modeling from the Prequels: Jango Fett chasing Obi-Wan), which would prevent "how are they running out of gas" questions and provide a bit more spectacle for Poe and the retreating crew. Like only one man can fly a ship that fat through an asteroid field this dense.

I also think TLJ should have BEGUN with the fight between Luke and Kylo, kicking off high action, then cutting away at a crucial moment (say, when Luke's preparing himself to be cut down) so we're left with the question, "How's he gonna get out of this one? IS HE?" and then flashing back to the movie events that lead us back to the crucial moment at the end of the film, where meaning and significance has changed from the initial reception, and now the stakes are even HIGHER than before. (I originally had this idea for BATMAN VS SUPERMAN.)

That would sure be patronising but fuck, ill take anything at this point.

People had an emotional reaction to the death of Newt and Hicks before the opening scene of Alien 3, and it being emotional doesn't make it invalid. Emotional reactions are one of the key goals in making a film, but being pissed off at the film itself isn't a goal to pursue.

You seem to want to treat the end result of a film as the same, regardless of where the filmmaker started from in the beginning.

If you have $50,000 in your bank account at the end of the day, that's a different result depending on whether you started the day with $10,000 or $100,000.

If you are gifted a great deal of audience emotional capital before you even start filming your movie, it is on you if you squander it.

There are good reasons that people love (or loved) Terminator 2, Rocky 2-4, Rambo 2, Aliens, Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, Godfather 2. And it's not simply about having their preconceived expectations come to fruition. People weren't hoping for Fredo to die.

After giving the movie some more thought I'm even more upset about how bad it was. Holy hell I just read that there are quite a few people calling this one of the best star wars, some even saying its better than ESB. Are they just trolling? Lemme list just some of the issues with TLJ:


1. horrible plot:
-rebel ship floats through space for around 2 hours of movie time then rebels escape

2. pointless side stories:
-the entire casino part was a waste of time
-Fin and the two pointless characters boarding the Destroyer was a waste of time

3. pointless characters:
-mechanic asian lady
-the code breaker dude
-Phasma (lol at bringing her back to kill her again)
- the king of irrelevancy; Finn

4. Way to much humor:
-is this star wars or guardians of the galaxy?
-so much forced humor that it was hard to even take any parts serious
-Mary Poppins flying Leia lol

5. The movie destroyed any interesting cliffs/ story lines:
-Snoke was a huge can with no story
-nothing interesting about Rey's backstory
-Luke just disappeared
-The rebels and the first order are pretty much depleted so they aren't threatening at all anymore
-the only villain is temper tantrum Kylo who was proven to be inferior to Rey once again (she even had to save him lol)


Overall probably my least favorite star wars ever. The only ones that may be worse are Phantom Menace and Clone Wars (Even the plot of those movies were far better than TLJ though)

Yea...the ham fisted humor is lame and annoying.

Riveting eh?

I was scavenging for anything up to this point, willing to accept anything average and promise to lie to myself later about how "riveting."

When the light saber struck snoke, i first thought, its an injury. This is how theyll get away. Then..well, i was wrong.

Then all these valets come out and they all have these medieval space weapons and they *kinda put up a fight. Then i noticed, all of them have blast shields on... They didnt seem Sith like, so they basically put up a basic fight and did it blindly.

When it was over, kylo wanted to be a bad guy again. This, THIS is what people are referring to as "fresh, unexpected?" Were out of villains and we have a fucking 3rd movie, of course hes gonna stay bad, the ugly bastard killed han solo. This wasnt genius.

No, what was unexpected was a star wars movie where no light saber v light saber battle happens.

What was fresh was me, feeling a sense of dissatisfaction. Yes, ive never felt a sense of "thats it?!" when watching a star wars movie. Def new feels here.

Hah, like I said, the characters go a long way for me and my own personal enjoyment of movies like this. But, here you are complaining that the scene was predictable because of course we have a third movie, and at the same time you're disappointed that some of the predictable star wars things like light saber batlles didn't happen. I get it, though, and I'm not going to insult anyone for disliking it.

To each their own. I enjoyed the story and I was into the action all the way through. Maybe it didn't have the gravitas I was hoping for, maybe it was more jokey than Star Wars should be. But, whatever it is, it is first and foremost a fun and thrilling movie, imo. If I held every movie plot, story, and dialogue to the strictest scrutiny, I'd never be able to enjoy movies like, say Point Break. Or Heartbreak Ridge. Or Road House, Starship Troopers, The Last Boy Scout, etc, etc, etc. Some movies are just fun, this is one of them.

People have a common narrative.. "They make the same old plot, we get called copycats. We do something different and we get people missing the old stuff"

I would rather have more of the same, if i am to have more regardless, than a giant dish of Fuck You.
