You didn't think Lightspeed Bullet was neat? They're not building up Holdo; they're building up Dameron.
I feel like this is where most of us get ahead of ourselves. As you said in another thread, it's not as though we can turn these guys into superheroes. Great point. I know you're not expecting superheroes, that what you desired from its potential is well within SW principles -- but at the same time fans have had years and DECADES to ruminate on the countless potentials and build and build and build on our (pre/mis)conceptions. It's only natural to be disappointed, but again at the same time, that's not exactly the fault of the film for not consulting us beforehand. It didn't know we were the experts.
Oh, I thought it was totally cool. But, like someone else pointed out, why is Holdo doing this part instead of Ackbar? Thats what I mean by all this ruined potential. Theyre building up Poe, but theres no reason they need Holdo to do it. Shedding the old to bring in the new is all well and good, but you have to respect it. Replace Holdo with Ackbar and you have the same build up for Poe
and you get a great send off for one of the older characters. Plus you could use the time used for Holdo to show the friction between Ackbar and Poe, solidifying a past relationship, making the sacrifice even more important to Poes growth as a character.
Im fine with lots of the stuff that happened. I was predicting Kylo would kill Snoke, and Reys parents being nobodies is, when seen completely in a self contained vacuum, a neat revelation. However, it completely flies in the face of the first movie. We even had Obi Wan Kenobi
telling Rey "these are your first steps", implying a previous force use which was important to the character. Now, she
is a total Mary Sue, which Ive argued against since FA. Abrams seemed to plant the seeds where her power creep could be explained, now here she is going toe to toe with a bunch of Praetorian guards (who
do not have blaster holes in their stomachs) with perfect saber form. So now she literally did just pick up a light saber for the first time and is an expert saber duelist. This is the
exact criticism levied towards her character from the first movie, except now it's indefensible within the narrative.
Thats just one thing, though, theres so many. I said it before, but I have virtually no problem with where the story and characters finally ended up, its how they got there that bugs me. Without even getting into entire segments that were plain bad, like the casino planet.
