too fucking long. shit time management. garish humor during serious moments that fell flat every time. too many sub plots that go nowhere & lacks meaningful development that feels organic. fun action sequences, even if a majority of the film was just a daisy chain of action set pieces w/ shallow stakes. too fucking long.

5/10 tho. could have been a lot worse, but there is still plenty of stuff to enjoy once you push aside all the muck. can’t say i really give a fuck about seeing the next one though. TFA may have been ANH v2.0, but at least it accomplished exactly what it set out to accomplish, & i had a lot of fun for the most part throughout the entire runtime. unfortunately wasn’t at all the case for TLJ

Mark Hamill is 66 years old. Luke can't stick around forever.
I know. I said I was fine with Luke being killed off, but as much as a legit lightsaber fight? Sheesh...

As for the nature of the Force, it makes sense in my opinion that future Jedi will learn how to use it in new ways. Look at it like MMA fighters becoming more refined as the sport develops and evolves.
Rationalize it anyway you like, the force is now the ultimate Deus Ex Machina.

The only problem, as I see it, is if the precedent that was set in this film is violated with no logical explanation in future films.

I doubt Disney cares if their Star Wars sequels have plot holes, what really matters is how many hundreds of millions less the next one will make than the one before it.

Is that not a bit rote and predictable?

It always has been. From the beginning, characters use it when it's convenient for the plot but not when it's inconvenient. With little to no explanation given.

I mean, if you can control people's minds, why not do it when shit gets sticky? If you can move objects, why not toss people around instead of fighting with laser guns and light sabers?

It's not that these things don't happen . . . it's that they only happen in a way that allows the movie to continue.

One thing I noticed recently when going through all the earlier films is that the rules of the Force are NEVER defined. That's not unique to the Disney films.

Saw this on Sunday. Great movie. Disney is doing a masterful job with this new SW movies. 10/10

Force Deus Ex Machina really wasn't much of a problem in the original trilogy. It pops up in the prequels (force speed at the start of Phantom Menace) and stuff like Mary Poppins Space Leia isn't really set up. It's worth noting that these situations requiring a previously unknown "force escape" never needed to be (and shouldn't have been) written in the first place.

But as to mind control in the original trilogy, Kenobi and Luke don't spend much time dealing with opponents that have weak minds, but when they do, they use mind tricks with some consistency.

Ok watched it tonight and just was bored throughout. Lots of plot issues that made no sense and just no drama in it.

Spoiler Review to Follow

As others have said, all the main characters never actually appeared in any danger, opening space battle was entertaining but the whole bombers thing made zero sense. So, you have a giant ship, they blasted the cannons off the top, maybe flip your big ass ship on its axis and make the bottom the top? They just made the first order dumb as shit throughout.

Snoke was an absolute throwaway character too. It would have been the equivalent of having the Emperor murked on Cloud City in Empire Stirkes Back.

Leia was treated idiotic as well. Which sucked because I felt Carrie Fisher really brought it when needed but was given very little to work with.

The whole forced humor thing was idiotic too. The dialogue by Poe at the beginning was cringe worthy at best.

Not to mention Luke just casually tossing the lightsaber away. I felt they absolutely butchered his character. Not to mention they really could have done more with the flashback to the loss of the Jedi Temple. Maybe show Ben wrecking his way through the other trainees and taking some with him like Luke said. So what happened to those he brought with him? Where did they go?

I felt Driver did well this time around though, I enjoyed his character much more than in the previous one.

The Force was just a convenient plot device for this movie, it could just do whatever the hell they needed it to do to move the plot. Want to survive in space? We have the Force for that. Want to move a giant shit ton of stuff, we have the Force for that. Want to look younger, interact with things and stall people, we have the Force for that. All the previous limitations the past movies had placed on it were thrown out.

Additionally, the fact the New Republic was just smacked out of existence in one strike by the First Order was dumb as hell. Maybe if they had actually showed something in TFA other than some planets going kaboom it would have made some sense, but in this one it was just like OK so all the sudden we are down to a handful of ships and the First Order has half a dozen Star Destroyers and a Dreadnaught...

Like others have said, the whole thing just felt like "Fuck it, here is where we are going now!"

I loved it. Dunno wtf u guys are bitching about. Just got out of the movies and that was awesome. Don't listen to the haters just go see it

I liked the force awakens too.

Did not like rogue one

No, its giving the fans what they want.

One thing I noticed recently when going through all the earlier films is that the rules of the Force are NEVER defined. That's not unique to the Disney films.

The Force through the movies and extended universe has gone into further detail of the abilities of force-user, and never in anything has it detailed being to survive in space, unprotected, for a time. Nor has it been possible to project their physical form across lightyears from one side of the galaxy to the other.

But, now it is possible to do both these things, because the plot requires it.

I'd rather not go into detail with movie-by-movie details of the 'new-abilities' of force-users suddenly discovered, but it's been pretty consistent for a long while.

Telekinesis (Which is used in a variety of ways)
Mind-Reading.
Looking into the past, present, and future.
Force Lightning.

That's the gist of 97% of Force-Powers.

How about that time Leia choked a 4000 lb worm by wrapping a chain around its "neck"? Or when a bunch of teddy bears destroyed giant robots with rocks and sticks? Or that time a farm boy piloted an x-wing fighter for the first time through a maze of laser canons and shot a torpedo into a two meter hole that just happened to be a perfect tunnel to the core which destroyed a moon sized planet killing weapon?

Yeah, Star Wars, man. It's all a pile of shit.
Exactly. Just sit Back and enjoy.

I laughed, cried, and had a permanent grin on my face for this movie.

You guys are all dumb

Also the reason most force users don't try to rag doll each other is because they have force barriers around them when they battle.

To break the barrier you either have to be vastly stronger in the force or catch them off guard. That's why most jedi and sith engaged in saber battles.

Grevious was a special case because he had reflexes on par with jedi masters and a unique dueling style. And just force pushing someone mid battle takes a lot of concentration. Most times he fought jedi when they were full of fear or he had the obvious advantage.

The Force has always been inconsistently applied.

I don't know how many times, while I was watching the OT, I thought to myself, "Why aren't you controlling that dude's mind RIGHT FUCKING NOW? HUH? DID YOU EVEN TRY? BECAUSE IT SURE WOULD BE MORE CONVENIENT THAN FIGHTING HIM!" They weasel out of it a bit by saying "weak minds" without giving us any way to know how to identify a person with a weak mind.

Or I would be watching some shit where I'm like, "Luke, why the fuck aren't you using the Force to get out of this situation?! Make that shit over there fly and hit that fucker in the head or something!"

But ultimately I just accepted that it was what it was. If Luke Forced (pun intended) his way out of every situation then there's no tension. You just have to go with it.

The one thing I will agree with you guys on is the moment when Leia is in space. That was stupid and made no sense.

But I do not agree regarding Luke's projection technique. That distinctly seemed like the kind of thing, within the Star Wars universe, that the Force might be able to be used for. I have no problem with characters finding new ways to use and manipulate the Force. Remember that it is supposed to be an energy. There are a lot of ways to use energy.

But why didn't Luke just bust into Jabba's place and start Force wrecking everybody instead of allowing himself to be captured?

He was already plenty strong at that point.

For enjoying a movie I paid to see? Whatever.

Whose the idiot who spent $20 and left pissy?
no, for laughing. only person who laughed a couple times in the theatre was a child. everyone else were adults so we didn’t actually laugh at the pathetic attempts at humor, except for this one lady who did so awkwardly at one point.

i spent nothing because MoviePass bork1}
