Wasn't properly conveyed. See Kylo put as much in his attacks as Finn did. And Finn blocked those attacks.
Compare that with how Vader toyed with Luke in Empire. That was properly done.
Note the casualness of how he sparks his saber...holding it with one hand (which at the time was seen to be a new thing). He simply shrugs off Luke and Luke goes flying. Luk's putting everything into his attacks and Vader is shrugging them off like it is nothing. And when Vader misses its not because Luke blocked it but because Luke is running away. And the whole while Vader is trash talking Luke.
And this is after Luke had initial training with Ben, a few years gap to further train between new hope and empire, and a week with Yoda.
There are ways to convey cat and mouse...JJ made it much too subtle that allot of people didn't get it, missed it or it wasn't so much of a gap that they were expecting in skills. Maybe he could have added more pauses with Kylo chirping Finn? Or maybe he could have had Kylo daring Finn to take a swing? The window was there for JJ to convey cat and mouse properly, making it much MUCH more obvious which would have added much more danger/weight to the scene as well as the next sword fight sequence with Ren...but he missed the boat entirely.
In short, piss poor direction from JJ.
Lol. I trust JJ more than you.
