Movies STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS v.9 (Dragonlord's Review)

Some people still have enough taste to not forgive stupidity like raptors fighting off the back of t rex, or Ren learning the force in 5 seconds.

I guess you're just better than all the people who enjoyed the movie.

I think you've become accustomed to mediocrity...the prequels would do that to you.

Caterwauling on a message board does nothing to improve my enjoyment of a film or the quality of my life.

I've said since I saw this film that I enjoyed it but it wasn't great.

Jesus does everyone forget the entire purpose of forums?

You post a thought, I either complement or challenge the thought. That's how this works. If nobody challenged anyone's thoughts this place would be extremely dull.

I honestly don't care what your enjoyment of the film was.

ROTJ has the best first act and the best final act in any Star Wars film.

Jabba's Palace absolutely shits on Maz Kanata's crappy knock-off of a tryhard Cantina and the emotion and triumph of "I am a jedi ... like my father before me" destroys anything else in the whole 7 film saga. That's even without the heartbreak of the death of secretly lovable mass-murderer/torturer Vader.

Throw in those man-eating murder bears and the death of Yoda and you got a god damn classic.

Even with the Ewoks - and I really hate those furry little bastards - Return is joint GOAT along with Empire.

You want me to challenge one of your ideas? OK.

I have absolutely no problems with Ren in the final sequences of the film. He'd clearly been seriously injured and didn't seem to be taking Finn very seriously. The second he did, he turned Finn into a kebob. I was surprised by the success Rey was having, but there seems to be a lot to her story we don't know yet, and I imagine she's going to turn out to be incredibly strong with the Force.

I think your point about how your villain can't appear weak is fundamentally flawed. I think your position is one of the reasons two-dimensional villains are so typical in theater, most people don't need their villains to be actual characters with depth, characters that change, develop and grow.

He is also an apprentice with quite a bit of raw power. He demonstrated this early when he froze the blaster bolt, and then when he ripped the information from Poe's mind. We got our first glimpse of how strong Rey is going to be when she resisted his mind probe. It's entirely possible she's got a lot more raw power than he has. Many things are possible, this film is the first in a trilogy. I love that these two are so unknown as opposed to simply following the archetypes we've seen a thousand times and you seem to really want.

Their fight in the film was basically Rey doing everything she could to survive while an injured Ren fought not to kill her, while trying to turn her, until finally she tapped her raw power to prevail. I thought it was well done. That moment where she took the saber from him at the beginning (to the Force Theme) was a major HELL YEAH moment for me. It opened a world of possibilities, which hopefully we'll see blossom over the rest of the series. Aren't you curious about Rey's origin? I sure as hell am.

Off topic:

Previously you stated there wasn't a decent main villain in Star Wars since Vader.
I pointed out Sidious, who was the main villain for the entire prequel trilogy.
You replied saying he wasn't in this movie (assuming you meant The Force Awakens).

Worst case of self-spoiling ever...

I read the novelization of Return of the Jedi before the film was released because I couldn't wait.

BVG hates the film but he sure spends a ton of Fn time in this thread talking about it.

The best way to show your hate is too not support these threads.

Wasn't properly conveyed. See Kylo put as much in his attacks as Finn did. And Finn blocked those attacks.

Compare that with how Vader toyed with Luke in Empire. That was properly done.

Note the casualness of how he sparks his saber...holding it with one hand (which at the time was seen to be a new thing). He simply shrugs off Luke and Luke goes flying. Luk's putting everything into his attacks and Vader is shrugging them off like it is nothing. And when Vader misses its not because Luke blocked it but because Luke is running away. And the whole while Vader is trash talking Luke.

And this is after Luke had initial training with Ben, a few years gap to further train between new hope and empire, and a week with Yoda.

There are ways to convey cat and mouse...JJ made it much too subtle that allot of people didn't get it, missed it or it wasn't so much of a gap that they were expecting in skills. Maybe he could have added more pauses with Kylo chirping Finn? Or maybe he could have had Kylo daring Finn to take a swing? The window was there for JJ to convey cat and mouse properly, making it much MUCH more obvious which would have added much more danger/weight to the scene as well as the next sword fight sequence with Ren...but he missed the boat entirely.

In short, piss poor direction from JJ.

I think you just want to argue at this point. Luke is much more competitive with Vader than Fin was with Ren.

He'll tell you that he liked it and gave it a 7 or an 8 or something as a way to try to build a sense of objectivity.

Are people still thinking TFA will beat Titanic? I'm having doubts, now that it's not doing very well in China.
I don't anymore and I down graded before China numbers, but it may beat it with a re-release in the future.

I didn't think it was a good film, but I enjoy talking about SW with other fans. A lot of the discussion lately hasn't even been about the film.

But he's bashing it constantly. It just seems strange to keep coming back here for that reason.

I haven't been paying attention to his posts, but it seems like a waste of his time if he keeps bringing up the same points.

I get it, I have friends just like him. Some times I am him.

You love something a lot, and then when a new version of that thing comes out, and it isn't as good as you'd hoped it would be, it's frustrating.

I have a friend who has been a Doctor Who fan since the seventies, and whenever anyone in our group mentions the new episodes he goes off about how terrible it is.

I understand how much he loved the Who franchise and how disappointed in this new incarnation he is, but there comes a point you just want to punch him in the nose because we get it so shut up already.

There are plenty of threads in this forum where people talk about shows that I'd hoped would be good but ended up disappointing me and I try to avoid complaining about those shows, because people are really enjoying them and to be honest, they don't need to know what I don't like.

One place I fail is the new Star Trek movies, because screw those movies, they aren't Star Trek. They're generic science fiction with Star Trek nomenclature. I don't care at all if people are enjoying them, they aren't enjoying Star Trek.

So yeah, I get it. I do it.

But I don't like it, and I don't think it adds much to the conversation.

To dislike something is fine.

But To keep coming back over and over again to continue complain doesn't make much sense.
