STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS Official Thread v.6

After reading Supereems spot-on brutal critique that reminded me of the awesomeness of Tarkin I'll have to revise the score down to 4/10.

5/10 First half was good and second one got me yawning with some very stupid crap. Felt very much like I watched a movie that I had already seen. I assume this is all because Disney and JJ wanted to play it safe and played very much too safe.

And had they done anything remotely different, the nerds would have lost their ever loving minds.

No disrespect to any of you gents, but this puppy is sitting at 95% on Rotten Tomatoes and some critics who I highly respect are giving it 9's and 10's. I'll stick with their advice thank you.
Its not bad, its just simple and predictable. Also I didnt like how some characters seemed rushed. Like Finns

It was also lazy to basically have the deathstar 3 as the major threat, and werid how something that massive could have been built and the resistance now supported by the republic allowed it to be built, yet with no other info on it manage to plan a raid in less then a day to take it down. It's also Ghey that they killed of Han

I think you summed up my feelings on the movie pretty well Dragonlord. Whilst I did enjoy it it wasn't as great as I had hoped it would be and I agree this was so typically JJ Abrams it was essentially a rehash of the Star Trek movies relocated to the Star Wars universe. Started off really well with some quality action set pieces and gave me some nice feelings of nostalgia but I did feel my attention starting to waver a bit towards the latter stages. My biggest gripe about the movie though was the villains,
Kylo Ren was pretty Badass til the helmet came off to reveal his geeky little mug, Ginger General Lux was just piss poor and Supreme leader Snookie was nothing more than lame ass cgi that felt like a recycled version of smegol from LOTR (and of course also played by Andy Serkis).
All in all though as I already said it was an enjoyable enough spectacle on the big screen and certainly didn't leave my childhood dreams crushed in the way The Phantom Menace did. I live in hope that they can raise the bar that bit higher on the next 2 installments of the trilogy and maybe, just maybe, reclaim the glory days of the originals.

It was fucking great !!!
That supereem review is laughable. All i'm reading is " this shit sucks, oh and this shit sucks too, you know why ? because it's shitty and it sucks "

So was that leaked spoiler from about a month ago largely legit?

People here have agreed with me.

Some have criticized my views IRL by saying "if you wanted the old Starwars go watch the old Starwars". First of all I didn't want the old Starwars, I wanted a decent film. In fact this film suffered from being a shitty ripoff to the old trilogy. Even small things like someone summoning a lightsabre out of the snow was copied.

The problem with this movie is that major parts of it were just plain bad. I agree with some posters here that the first half was decent and it started off well (although I wasn't a big fan of Han and Chewies intro). You cannot help but compare it to A New Hope because it is a poor carbon copy.

I beg someone to compare the destruction of Death Star 3 to the original and argue that they are equal. Forget Starwars and forget nerd shit, the original destruction of the Death Star was a cinematic masterpiece. The iconic quotes, brilliant use of models, the suspense the amazing characters all worked together to make a great scene. You will remember and quote the original Death Star scene until the day you die. Will you be quoting this one?

You enjoyed this movie because you got to see the old characters again, you got the see the force, you got to see lightsabre duels and there were X-Wings. You probably even liked the fact there was an even bigger Death Star. But take a step back and think about what was truly iconic and well done in the movie. What part of the movie would you consider 'art'? What part justifies it being preserved for future generations?

I don't think there is any reason this movie shouldn't have been as good as A New Hope. With Disney money that should have been achievable.

Home now 7/10. Really enjoyed it asked more questions then were answered. It's non stop but the kind of non stop where you can go for a piss and not miss anything. A ungodly amount of tributes to the originals and extremely predictable but a fun ride
Kylo ten was fucking awesome and I hope that alien dude running shit really is a giant. The fact R2d2 turned on when the girl entered the ship is confirmation she's lukes daughter right?

JUST TELL ME ABOUT THE FUCKING LENS FLARES

Can't edit for some reason but supereem is right. Don't expect art or anything too special. It's a good IMO nothing more nothing less. I enjoyed it and your kids are going to love it. Non spoiler spoiler

it was kind of like a remake.]/spoiler]

R2D2 turned on back at the "resistance" headquarters when they returned from destroying the Death Planet. This part pissed me off as well. Could R2 sense Han died and decided he was going to help them find Luke? He is a droid, put a USB in him and download his memory. It was shit like this that made it seem they wrote the plot in a day.

yes but they said he had stopped workingwhen Luke left. This was the first time she had been in the same vicinity and he switched on. I imagine many battles have been won and lost but they implied he stayed in sleep mode until her presence (perhaps)

Ah you're right actually, good spotting. That is likely the case then I reckon.

To others who've seen the movie, one thing i didn't get.. is there any good reason why
jakku
isn't just called
tattooine
?

Not about the movie as such but just something cool to add...

My girlfriend attended the Indonesian premiere on Tuesday and got to hang out and chat with all the guys from THE RAID and THE RAID 2(even the one from fast and furious 6 who isn't in star wars). They talked about making the force awakens before the showing and she talked to them after but they left really quick.

Shocked that the mad dog is friendly IRL

:)

Just speculating.
Maybe they didn't want it to be too repetitive by revisiting Tatooine. Story-wise, Tatooine is most likely well known by everyone in the galaxy as Luke's childhood home and if they were trying to find Rey, it's one of the places they'd look for her. Plus, Tatooine is a lawless place filled with Hutt gangsters or outlaws while Jakku seems like a desolate planet.

I will say another good aspect of the movie was how outer space looked. It was pitch black with stars. This was like the original, which is actually realistic. I didn't rate it in the prequels how everything in outer space was bright coloured nebulas.

Didn't I call that light saber shit months ago in that star wars hype thread.

Some evil bad ass with a decade of light saber dueling experience gets whipped by some random scrub who picked up there first lightsaber 30 minutes before the fight.

L o L

Happens in ever single star wars movie.
