Star Wars Megathread

I think the idea Starwars was some impossible to recreate magic formula was always questionable, it takes skill and respect for the material of course but really I think the reality is both the prequels and sequels are actually massive fuck ups.

The reality for me is Disney had a choice early on, do they take their time and try and build up the sequels well with skilled directors and writters who love the material or do they go for a quick fix, bring in hired hand Abrams and have him spin his nostalgia formula ASAP. After the Force Awakens box office I'm sure they felt they'd made the right call and doubled down on that style but the reality is justa s with Trek nostalgia doesnt last, Abrams had the mother of all nostalgia audiences as even the prequels hadnt really featured many original characters/actors beyond droids and Palpatine.

Beyond good drama really I think Mando shows that the key to Starwars isnt really "lore" its style, the original films don't really fill in the gaps that much in terms of exact details but they don't need to, what latters is the style, the mixture of used future, eastern exotic influences and western style outpost locations. Rogue One I think got that and Mando does as well, maybe making the western/samurai influences even more obvious.

I feel the prequels had some respect for the EU lore (Coruscant, clone Wars and Mauls double bladed saber) but sacrificed substance for style with too much CGI. The story arc however flawed was carried out....

The Sequel trilogy was a mess of zero consistency and disregard for the lore.

I think the prequels did get caught up rather too much in the lore in place of actually having good drama in them and whilst they did sometimes look good generally I think as you say there was too much CGI overload and grand scale in place of atmosphere.

The sequels were really just a mess on every level IMHO, no well thought out drama or story, zero respect for the franchise tossing achievements and character advancement from the originals in the trash and honestly simply a lack of talent. Just about the only thing they got right was casting Adam Driver who spent three films trying to save them from themselves.

Generally I think people always tend to give Starwars a bit of a free ride because they really want to love it but time is revealing these are just VERY bad films, confused, bland, silly messes of blockbusters that would have flopped massively without the Starwars brand.

Hey guys. I've got 2 kids, ages 5 and almost 7. They are expressing some interest in the Star Wars franchise. I'm a very casual fan who has probably seen 6(?) of the movies, although my strongest memories are of the originally released 3 films. I'm aware there are some shows, too. Where would y'all recommend introducing youngsters to the franchise? I'll probably hit the reset button on my own viewership and (re)start the journey with them.

The issue I'd say really is that a lot of the debate seemed to end up being reduced to talk about specific plot details, maybe because people think being specific will allow their argument to have some kind of objective merit?

The reality for me is that these films don't just fail as cinema due to some inconsistencies in the setting, they fail as cinema because of much more fundamental issues. That they don't build strong character stories, that they don't develop an atmospheric setting, that their tone and pace is widely inconsistent, etc.

They are the very definition of "turn your brain off" cinema for me, just a rapid fire tide of non special plotting, nostalgia, comedy and unearnt atempts at drama thrown at your face at 1000 mph. JJ Abrams should be designing theme park rides not making films.

i'd go from the prequels and go in order. but also include the clone wars, rebels etc. in chronological order - i think that would keep them interested for awhile - i found my kids didn't have the interest with the OT.

I've only had one person on ignore before this thread. Now I've got another. Ironically enough, both for the same reason - too much passion about a subject that leads to multiple post rants.
Some people don't use the ignore button on principle. That's fine. There are a couple more posters here that I'm close to doing it too as well, but they aren't at that level of annoyance....yet. If folks are fine with letting a person dominate their feed with inane diatribes that never lead to a resolution, then more power to them. Like the meme said, I don't have time for that. Glad you saw the light. Watch how much smoother the thread flows now. It will take a second to get used to some posters appearing to talk to a ghost, but other than that it will be fun again when you shut out the noisy static.

Well that depends on how much interest they really have. My kids have some interest as well, but when I try to get them into the lore they give blank stares. Like CHL said, the prequel movies with the Clone Wars animated series in chronological order (The series is an anthology that jumps around time periods) is a nice place to start. The prequels left more questions than answers originally, but the animated series really fleshed out Anakin's journey to the Dark side. You just have to get used to most of the story being told in an animated fashion.

The first episode is 216 which, if you are unaware, means Season 2 episode 16. The T for theatrical release doesn't mean the actual Attack of the Clones of the prequels, but the Animated Clone Wars movie they made.

I hope they really enjoy the time with you and a strong bond is formed from this.

I'd favour watching them in release order. Starting with the original trilogy to build interest(hopefully) in the mystery of Vader's origins and the Jedi order. Then the prequels that show the characters in their prime and shed light on what went wrong. Then the series Clone Wars which further helps to develop characters and cultures around the galaxy. Then the Rebels series which bridges the gap between the prequels and the originals. After that The Mandalorian which picks up after the originals and will hopefully act as a slate wiper for the future of Star Wars. I'd slot in Rogue One anytime after the originals

If you're going to watch things chronologically then,

Phantom Menace
Attack Of The Clones
The Clone Wars Series
Revenge Of The Sith
Rebels Series
Rogue One
A New Hope
Empire Strikes Back
Return Of The Jedi
The Mandalorian Series

Damn dude....you're right....no bullshit older me gets it now....he's not a personal favorite, but yeah I get it now.

Book is still 2nd tier, but but yeah, gotta move X up on the villain rankings because he is the only one like that.....

I concede to your point. Much hespect.

Cheers!

I got a question for you, did any of the novels or anything else specifically deal with the Blue Devil guy who was always advising Palpatine? Did anyone go on a quest to kill him? Is he just a career bureaucrat, advising whoever?

  • I believe the truest depiction is to follow the order of release date, but this deviates once you get to THE CLONE WARS, which benefits from being seen in narratively chronological order. This is for the STAR WARS head:
    • Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope (0 BBY/0 ABY)
    • Star Wars: Episode V — The Empire Strikes Back (3 ABY)
    • Star Wars: Episode VI — Return of the Jedi (4 ABY)
    • Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace (32 BBY)
    • Star Wars: Episode II — Attack of the Clones (22 BBY)
    • Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith (19 BBY)
      • THE CLONE WARS animated show
    • Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens (34 ABY)
      • Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (0 BBY)
    • Star Wars: Episode VIII —The Last Jedi (34 ABY)
      • Solo: A Star Wars Story (13 - 10 BBY)
    • Star Wars: Episode IX — The Rise of Skywalker (35 ABY)
  • For kids, I would just start with THE CLONE WARS -- excepting the last season. If they like it enough to continue, then skip the last season and do Bullet #1 (go through order of release date). On this round, while you're going through ATTACK OF THE CLONES and REVENGE OF THE SITH, pair that with another viewing of THE CLONE WARS (in NC order, if you didn't do that the first time).

Yeah, I wish to know more. Be cool if he was some kind of Sith adept or something...

That guy was like the P4P fart sniffer. I hope he got zapped by Sidious when he outlived his usefulness.

He was in the Darth Plagueis novel if im not mistaken. He’s a spineless yes man

I think he might have been one of the very people who knew Palpatine was The Sith Lord

Besides the apprentices, Sly Moore, Nate Pestage and Mas Ameeda (Blue guy) knew Palpatine was the Sith Lord

Wonder how that bit of info came up. I can see Palpatine on a spice bender and letting it slip one night.

because they were his right hand men and they worked directly side by side with him.

Palpatine wasn’t a fun guy. he didn’t drink and party or even bang chicks. He was a lame ass

LOL at the official Star Wars Twitter account ignoring James Earl Jones' birthday when it was trending on Twitter all day long yesterday.

Fucker running the account probably didn't realize that Vader's physical and voice actors were two different people and figured since Dave Prowse died there was no need for a birthday message....
