Yeah your right. It was originally concieved for a new movie Star trek: Planet of the Titians, and then phase 2, not the motion picture.
As already stated, its registry numbers puts it between ENT and TOS. I have seen some post that the registry could just be a tribute the space shuttle discovery, which is officially known as
discovery ov-103. So the number 1103 could be next in the line of discovery named ships that have the same number. So it could be later in the timeline.
Now here a couple points that have been going through my mind, that probably have no basis, but are things I picked up from the trailer and some of Fuller's posts. The ship design looks like a Federation ship and Klingon ship had a baby. It looks like a mix of D-7 and a Sovereign class ship. Bryan Fuller keeps posting pictures from Star Trek 6 : The undiscovered country, and has said he wants his series to be like that movie. For those who don't know the plot, it basically is about the Klingons and Federation finally come together and end years of war. They sign the historic Khitomer Accords, which is the treaty between the Federation and the Klingons. Now throughout TNG, DS9,and VOY the two sides grew closer and closer. Now what if this new series was about the Federation and Klingons building a new ship together for some new mission, or the Klingons joining the Federation. At the end of the trailer you can clearly hear the sound of a cloaking device. Does the new ship have a cloak? Those are standard on Klingon ships, but rare and technically outlawed on older Federation ships(Defiant had one). I'm probably just looking way to deep into it, but that could be a cool premise, a federation/Klingon ship on its first mission.
