Squats: Are they REALLY necessary?

yeah bro....totally serious.......

soooooo serious.....

you drunk or something???

Have you seen some of the shit on here ? You very well could have been.

I've been doing Pavel's deadlift routine for almost a year and alas, I did not die like many on here would like to argue as an excuse not to deadlift.

The OP asked if squats are absolutely necessary and I'm saying not if you replace them with deadlifts. I've been doing Pavel's deadlift routine for almost a year and alas, I did not die like many on here would like to argue as an excuse not to deadlift.

Can you name anyone here who actually argued that you shouldn't deadlift?

1. Tell us about how you have 1200lbs total, sprint 11.50s etc
2. Not visit here at all

I totaled over 1200, never sprinted under 13.5. But I think I'm entitled to my opinion.

So I do t really know what you are asking me.

Do you think I shouldn't visit a day all because I'm not an Eric brown fan??? That seems incredibly narrow minded.

For the record, I never questioned Eric browns knowledge or background, I just simply despise his bedside manner and the kids here are well aware of that as I have had discussions with them regarding the issue.

I'm not sure what your point is. Do you want to know how I totaled over 1200??? Is that what you are asking.

Do you want me to stop visiting sherdog because in not a fan of Eric brown???

What are you even saying??? Am I not allowe to have an opinion dfferent than yours???

Impressive athletic feats are quite obviously not a reliable indicator of training knowledge. Baffling how anyone could think otherwise.

"For dummies" being the key to the quoted post.

Because f13 is much more than that for people with a half-decent level of intelligence.

I've seen routines posted here that omit the deadlift entirely in place of only squats. When someone like Pavel suggests omitting the squat in place of deadlifts then there is a crisis.

The deadlift has always been treated like the squat's bastard half-brother.

I'm running the Russian bear for my OHP and it works well for that.

I've progressed a lot more when I started focusing on deadlifts and the movement itself is the most natural you can get, allowing you to lift the most poundage. You mimic the deadlift movement in everyday life, a lot more than the squat. It makes sense to focus on the lift that carries the most poundage as Pavel argues. Deadlift is king.

Watch a toddler pick something up. A flawless ass to grass squat is what you'll see. As natural as it gets. Deadlift or squat is dependent on what your goal is. If the goal is something athletic, then the squat is the way to go. If my goal was to pick up heavy shit slowly, then I'd deadlift more frequently. I don't deadlift outside of snatch grip deadlifts once or twice a month. It's not that it's intimidating, because it certainly isn't. It's just a waste of my time.

Dan Green loves stiff leg deadlifts from a deficit so I started those today for something new. I need the mobility work.

well, i don't know if the afore mentioned 1200 counts as impressive, but i have a 1200 total and if you are looking for the training knowledge that went into that, you'd need to talk to my trainer. That's his job. My job is to pick up heavy stuff without hurting myself.

(and yes, i know nobody is going to believe me since i don't have a log or videos. i don't care. my point is that i have a guy to design my program for me just like i have a guy to do maintenance on my car for me. I just want everything to work and have enough power to do what i ask of it. i can't be the only one... so i'd say you are definitely correct that it isn't an indicator of training knowledge.)

on topic: my trainer feels that squats are definitely necessary.

Interesting. I hit 1200 with the strong lifts 5x5 app on my iPod and a few 2.5lb plates that I hauled around to different gyms.

squats are only necessary for the pros imo (in some variation or another). all the powerlifters do it, oly lifters and im sure strongman competitors do aswell. so to answer the ops question, yes its absolutely necessary if you are a pro, but if you are just a regular joe then no. to quote taranenko "squat is the most important assistance for oly lifters", this dude cnj'd 500+ lbs.

I wouldn't say it's absolutly necessary. There are many ufc fighters that would pick a bosu ball over squatting. I think the squat is the best exercise for leg strength although in my belief the dead is the most essential for strength. I personally enjoy squatting more though.

I think if you don't want to squat don't, especially if your not a pro. Why do something you hate doing? But you won't find an exercise better for building leg strength than the barbell squat. No way.
