World’s lowest fertility rate leaves Seoul 50,000 troops short of maintaining defence readiness, report warns

South Korea’s military has shrunk by 20% in the past six years, largely due to a sharp decrease in the population of men of enlistment age for mandatory service in the country with the world’s lowest birthrate, according to a report.

The sharp decline in the pool of men available for military service is also causing a shortfall in the number of officers and could result in operational difficulties, the defence ministry said in the report.

The report was made to the ruling Democratic party member of parliament Choo Mi-ae, whose office released it.

The size of South Korea’s military has declined steadily since the early 2000s, when it had about 690,000 soldiers. The pace accelerated during the late 2010s and there are now about 450,000 troops.

North Korea is believed to have an active-duty military of about 1.2 million, according to the latest estimate by the defence ministry in 2022.

- Korean soldiers get al the girls and the hootie tranies

The population of 20-year-old men in South Korea declined between 2019 and 2025 by 30% to 230,000, according to government data. Twenty is the age when most men who pass a physical exam enlist for military service.

South Korea is one of the world’s fastest ageing societies and has the lowest fertility rate in the world at 0.75 in 2024, which signifies the average number of babies a woman is expected to have during her reproductive life.

Its population, which hit a peak of 51.8 million in 2020, is expected to shrink to 36.2 million by 2072, according to a government projection.

The country’s armed forces have cited improved capabilities as a key reason for shortening service periods, made possible by a military alliance with the US and the development of a defence industry that has become a big exporter of arms.

Able-bodied men served 36 months in 1953 when the Korean war ended in an armistice.

South Korea’s defence budget, at more than 61tn won (£33bn) in 2025, is larger than the estimated size of the North’s economy.

- I want a baby, weak man.

Still, the country’s military is 50,000 troops short of the number deemed adequate for maintaining defence readiness, the ministry said. About 21,000 of the shortfall is in the non-commissioned officer ranks, it said.

It will hit all Western civilizations, as women bear less children and give birth way later than the previous generations. Inevitable.

Guess they’ll have to scale things back. It’s not the end of the world. These countries got in just fine with significantly less population than they have now. They just need to make future preparations in all facets and sectors to accommodate a smaller and older out of work population. Automation was going to make this so anyway…or they can start to breed more prodigiously than they do now.

Whatever they do..they should know from watching the west what is absolutely not an acceptable answer to this issue.

I can't remember the context, but it wasn't long ago that someone on here was using South Korea as an 'ideal' country.

I remember pointing out suicide rates are through the roof and the societal pressure and drive towards success is far too much, but they seemed to think it was wonderful there.

As I grow older, it would seem life within a society is all about balance.

Western countries haven't got that balance right either, don't get me wrong, we're leaning far too heavily into capitalism and pandering to rich assholes who couldn't give a shit about anyone else, but South Korea seems to have failed in achieving that balance even more so.

Sad, really.

Yea our military expects young age group to enter service to start getting smaller in 2030s

Average age of soldier in ukr conflict is over 40 as well due to aging populations

World is changing and Interesting times are ahead it seems

South Korea is investing heavily to compensate situation.
For example North Korea mainly does have MRLS launchers with tubes loaded individually....so more time and more guys are needed.
South Korea mainly does have MRLS launchers with so called package loading...aka like HIMARS is using such loading solution too.
SK MRLS usually does have 2 - 6 pack blocks...
So truck with 12 rockets might be served actually by 2 guys, ok on paper 3...
Reloading truck too, just 2-3 guys.

They ofc should have modern military because unfortunately there is North Korea with Kim.

SK has more reserves if needed and has technical superiority over NK . It might be shakey with Trump in power the guy simply can’t be trusted if Russia is involved who is aligned with NK , I think all countries need to chill on the already over populated earth , combat troop numbers are far less significant these days wars will be won with better intel , unmanned equipment, drones ,state of the art weapons etc etc ., ultimately war will be dissuaded the stronger Nato is ,Trump wanted to get rid of nato so that tells you everything right there .

What countries have done well economically after significant drops in population?

What countries have done well economically after significant drops in population?

I didn’t see where I suggested there was any economic upside to a shrinking population. Because I didn’t. But that’s not all that matters. Certainly not to me. We don’t have any idea what economic prosperity in even 20 years really looks like.

I said they’ll have to scale back which is a suggestion to shrink/adapt rather than worry about the unsustainable goal of perpetual “growth” and importing a work force that too will have their hands out over the next 15 years competing for entitlements with the aging native population they were allegedly brought in to help subsidize entitlements for.

But we know that’s bullshit. It’s all for immediate benefit for a few employers and an even fewer more nefarious lot.

These countries used to make do with exponentially less people. They can again and they’ll just have to consider how very temporary the benefits of immigration is and how it will ultimately become just widening the future burden while possibly damaging your culture and nation irreparably.

I think countries like South Korea will choose another path and might have trouble fitting into some old jeans..but they’ll be better off than the “hubs” in the long run

What's the point? We all now know that the future of warfare belongs to drones. Whoever can manufacture the most and the best drones will win the future wars.

Less boots will be required on the ground with the technology advances.

I also accept examples of economies maintaining their current performance after a huge drop in birth rate. Do you have any?

And how do you think social safety nets are funded lol. Or health care workers are hired? It's not so easy to just cut back on them.
