International Somalia faces diphtheria surge amid vaccine shortages and aid cuts

Just don't let them migrate to the west and they can die where they are. Sounds like a built in solution

it is sad, but that is my opinion as well. Somalia has been an aid blackhole for decades, has only destabilized the region, exported illiterate migrants, and created terrorists.

Sometimes you just have to let nature run its course

I have always been less of an isolationist and believe in foreign aid of this type. Not some of the nonsense at times but this is good. This is a very low cost vaccine though and you are talking 7-800k kids born in Somalia each year. Its peanuts in terms of cost of vaccine. They still have civil war there since '09. Not sure who controls the funding or where the 3/4 of a billion go. But overall it should be nothing in terms of cost for vaccinations

But this is a childhood vaccine and innocent of adult actions. Its only .50-1.00 per vaccine. And only 7-800k born a year there. I'd be more interested to know where the money goes once it gets to Somalia

Imagine thinking it's edgy to applaud the slow, dying death of children due to diptheria.

All because you're a selfish little pig who would prefer that people with 7 vacation homes save money on their taxes rather than give a literal fraction of those tax savings to a black kid who is slowly wasting away a vaccine.

America's individualism has turned in to pure, unadulterated selfishness.

Trickle down warriors. Won't spend 10 cents on a dying child, but here GOP, take thousands of dollars out of my pocket.

Well, unfortunate as it is, I was just saying that maybe the 700-800k born a year there is more of a problem than the diphtheria. If the country does not have the infrastructure and stability to handle that type of population growth, leading them to have a migrant crisis and a breeding ground for terrorists, among other things, maybe we shouldn’t be supporting that type of population growth there, regardless of the cost

Weird that the NGO's are going broke. They take private donations, seems like all the people who believe in their mission would just step up and donate their own money.

I wish people were this curious about the Pentagon literally losing trillions of dollars, and completely unable to pass an audit, ever. The excuse given is antiquated accounting systems. Yet they've been using this excuse for 20+ years and for some reason have never bothered to update this accounting system that loses trillions upon trillions of dollars.

Let me remind you.

1 million seconds = 11.5 days
1 billion seconds = 37 years
1 trillion seconds = 31,688 years

Something like 3 trillion taxpayer dollars just poof, vanished in to thin air. And we are worried about auditing children receiving vaccines so they don't actually die a lingering and slow death? Seriously?

Well you wouldn't think that way if it was your family. It's easy to say it's not our problem. It's the reason the world watched the situations in Sudan and the Congo. Ultimately theres nothing in it for us.

Right. You donate (through tax breaks and you having to pick up the slack) to billionaires so they can get gold toilets in their luxury private jet, but vaccines for kids who are dying is just a bridge too far.

What is it about supply side economics that so intrigues you?

Oh I don't disagree. And that was the point I made about where did the 3/4 of a billion dollars go that was given to Somalia. To be honest one gets the feeling that the government likes there to be haziness in how it spends its money and where the money goes. Just to say you gave somalia $785 million is enough. But was that money used to continue the war? Line the pockets of the people at the top? Who knows

Why am I not surprised that people in this forum are happy that children are dying of a preventable disease.
Why won't Somalia prevent it then? As a US taxpayer I want my tax money to stay here and help my country first and foremost. Have we cleaned up Detroit tap water? Have we fixed drug addiction and homelessness? nonprofits are a joke and only expend pennies on the dollar helping those on need.
Anyone shedding tears over the us tax money tap dying up are free to donate their own money

Ya, I wasn't directing that post at you per se.

And I agree with your post above. I've made the same observation about the law and taxes. They seem to be overly sophisticated, yet intentionally vague. This seems to allow for wiggle room for those with the resources to afford a really clever lawyer/CPA.

So the US taxpayer is responsible for funding everything in the world.we still give a massive amount of aid but its never going to be enough. In dollars we give the most of any country.
If you could choose, which one would you pick for America:

Contribute to vaccines and AIDS drugs for the children of the world

OR

Tax deduction for private plane purchase

What is your choice?

I need to know a hell of a lot more details

No mater we have to decide which and how many because we can't and should not try to do it all.

Because it's been a war torn shithole for 30+ years.
We're not talking about gender studies in Panama or whatever the fuck you guys like to parrot. This is children dying from a preventable disease.

I'm all for spending money to help people with addiction and homelessness, but Republicans are always slashing those budgets. The wealthy need those tax breaks, and we gotta make up the money somehow. So, they slash Medicare, housing assistance, food stamps, etc. You know, the stuff that would help those with addiction and homelessness get out of those situations.

But, we all know, the cruelty is the point.

Yeah, gotta pay for those tax cuts, huh? What a copout. This is a cheap way to get good will. It's soft power. This isolationist position is so ridiculous. The biggest superpower on Earth shouldn't spread its influence? It's nonsensical.

We can't do it all. You act like we stopped all aid.

Im all for reviewing who and why but we have to make choices.
