WASHINGTON – Netflix shelled out an eye-popping $10 million for rights to a documentary about young upstarts running for Congress starring Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.


Deadline first reported the amount the streaming giant paid for “Knock Down the House,” a film that followed four women vying for office during the 2018 election cycle.


The website said it was the largest sum ever brokered at a film festival for a documentary.


Of the four contenders, only Ocasio-Cortez won.


The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival late last month.


Ocasio-Cortez was headed to the premiere, but pulled out a day before her planned appearance, citing “complications from the government shutdown.” The shutdown had ended the day before.


She instead appeared via video at the screening.


Since then “Knock Down the House” has won Sundance’s Festival Favorite Award.

What alarms? This is capitalism, Netflix is banking that the documentary will net them profits. Documentaries have been steadily increasing in value, and this one has apparently won at least one award.

Also, the ten million was what Netflix plaid for rights to the film, not what's going to AOC.

Netflix is? AOC seems to be getting just as much bad press as good. Ideas can be debated in the public sphere, I'm not going to be fearful of any person or idea being given a platform. We have freedom of speech, and so does the maker of this documentary.

She's in the documentary, but I don't think she has any actual stake in it and so won't see any of the profits. The subject of a documentary and the producer of a documentary are two very different things.

Netflix just saw a documentary, that someone else made, and they think it's going to be popular, so they snagged the rights.

It's insane that you've read that and taken it to mean that AOC is now a millionaire, which somehow violates her socialist ideals.

I don't think she gets a cut from any proceeds/deals etc, not because she's not entitled to it, but because she said she doesn't want any money from it.
