So what's the deal with "locker room" bonuses???

Its just a way to control the fighters and something to tell fans who whine about fighter pay.

You missed my point champ. The bonus was $75K minus half to Uncle Sam.

If he used the entire post tax amount, that would put him at less than $200K/yr gross taxable income, assuming he didn't have dividend income or 100 dependents.

He fought 5 times with 4 bonuses in 2011.

I'm not sure how you would expect anybody to get that point from what you wrote champ. lol

Very much this! Because the contract figure is so small for 90+% of the fighters, they have to compensate them behind the scenes on a discretionary basis (meaning, not guaranteed, toally up to Zuffa, which gives fighter less security, but all the power to the organization, great if ur Dana, opposite of great if ur a pro fighter)...

its all about control and bargain power...UFC has too much, and fighters almost none... Great eh... very much unlike any other pro sport out there...and people wondering when MMA will be mainstream and attract top athletic talents...never (with the current structure)

Reading comprehension pal.

No dude, there are lots of educated people on this site, and I am not sure anyone gets the point. He paid his taxes owed with money he earned. What is the point?

Well the general idea is that if fighters do get locker room bonuses then they don't report it to the IRS. Based on Cerrone's comment only...

LOL! I grew up watching this.

I bet you the locker room bonus is probably a $10 gift card to Subway or some shit.

I don't believe the IRS thing. Because they would have become wise to that by now... Makes no sense.

If I gave you $10K in casino chips, then you walk into the casino and get cash for it, would you report it to the IRS so they could take half of it?

And no one is dumb enough to deposit 10K+ in cash at a bank.

agreed. it leaves fighters beholden to the random generosity of dana and the ufc. not the way that a true professional organization should run.

Who wonders this? Jon Jones is a top athletic talent. His brothers are both NFL players. His genetics are top of the line. Ronda Rousey won an Olympic medal. A lot of wrestlers and boxers have been Olympic alternates or trained for the Olympic team in their country. We have most of the best BJJ fighters in the world in MMA.

MMA isn't for reject athletes. Combat sports and basketball/football are a different animal. MMA has the top talents.

do they even do it in a locker room or do they mail you a check?

They definitely report it, if they are smart. The UFC is accountable for these bonuses, and definitely includes them when they report their income and expenses to the IRS. The numbers wouldn't match up when the IRS compares them, and would cause investigation. I think some of them don't report it, because they aren't very intelligent, but I don't think it is some unspoken rule not to report it.

The UFC accounts for every dime of UFC money. Dana White money is a different story.

If you put on a good fight the UFC buys your gym a new locker room.

Exactly. To the random generosity, or personal favorite of DW/UFC. Its def not how a true professional organization should run. Dana and Zuffa are smart, they know that is not how a real pro organization should be, but since sport is run, and they monopolize, so they are just trying to get away with it for as long as the could. But it is actually hindering the long-term development of the sport and this structure will have to change if ever getting close to become mainstream with drawing top athletic talents away from other pro sports (which pays multiples times more on avg).
