So They're Actually Trying to Pass Off the Fake UFC Belt as PPV Main Event-Worthy Now?

Oh, don't get me wrong, good fight, Holloway vs Gaethje was a FOTY contender, but I didn't feel like it was a PPV main event.

It's okay to have amazing fights that aren't main events.

PPV main events really should be the best fighters in the division, preferably on decent winning streaks, fighting for the belt/#1 spot.

Obviously not all title fights are quite as legit as that, but this isn't any of those things. It's the Bronze Medal Play Off in Olympic terms.
UFC 314 was headlined by 1-3 Volkanovski vs Diego Lopes...neither was the champion, since a company title was on the line so it was all good.
IF the BMF belt is gonna be a real thing and have a true meaning then whats with the weightclass?, BMF has to be open weight, how can he be defined to a weightclass only?. If you really think about it BMF is not a sanctioned belt, its doesn't have a weight limit or any rules, so why is it not open weight?

BMF belt should be Topuria vs Derrick Lewis, or Holloway vs Alex Pereira, (just some examples). If BMF is not open weight then it makes no sense at all, the whole meaning of the belt who is is the baddest, so everyone in UFC roster should be involved to win it from flyweight all the way too heavyweight.

Seems like a silly marketing gimmick and to try make the cards seem like they have title fights lol.
MMA belts are not sanctioned. They somewhat adhere to the rules of boxing sanctioned belts, but still are just company titles, the very same thing they cant make in Boxing, but they are going to with TKO boxing.

It’s a great card
Should be fun
Back to back with PFL is going to be a doozy of a long day

PPV has got to die though for sure

Yeah, that was not an ideal one.

Fighters moving up a weight class generally do leave a bit of a void though.

You can't possibly be surprised by this

The only question that actually matters:

Does the BMF "title" trigger championship based bonuses and incentive clauses in their UFC contract?

Anybody know?
There's no way it triggers bonuses, but it may lock them into auto-renewing contacts. I say this based on how shitty the UFC is to fighters.

There might be some good action like there is on some Bellator/IFL cards, but the relevance of the fights is extremely low. Charging that kind of money for those fights is ridiculous. ABC special or even Fight Night level, not PPV.
Good Fights > boring fights of relevance in my book...

Do you watch the fights for the belts (brand?) or the fighters? Belts means nothing when they belong to the brand and not to the fighters, Holloway vs Poirier is a banger, Poirier vs Mcgregor 2 & 3 didnt need a belt to be on PPV yet are probably top 10 UFC PPV´s and gates.

/ thread.

All people do is fucking whine incessantly. It's tired.

Additionally, Gaethje said the belt locks in higher pay for the fighters involved. If that's the case, it's a good thing.

Not so long back I'd have said Holloway vs Poirier is a more interesting fight than, say, Merab vs Evloev but Merab has really piqued my interest lately and I'd kinda love to see him fight another talented grappler.

There aren't that many bad title fights they can make.

Shame this doesn't have Tom Aspinall or something as main event, that whole situation has been a giant waste of fucking time.

I'm fine with it. Don't care about the "BMF belt", but as a fight it's better than most title fights and their last fight was also a main event. It was for an interim title, but it's still the same guys fighting, and interim titles aren't much more legit than imaginary BMF belts.

Agreed on the heavy weight picture.... A real fooking shame...

Who fucking cares ? There was a time where plenty of ppvs didn't have a title fight main event. There are certainly going to be many title fights in the future that won't draw the buzz this fight does

Yeah you can have boring title fights and exciting lower-level fights, but overall, I'm much more excited when there are title fights and high-level contender matchups. I think they should save these kinds of fights for non-PPVs with the exception of the main event.

At least a real belt was up for grabs with implications for both guys & the division based on the outcome.

Most of the PPVs these days are underwhelming.

The ESPN contract guarantees $20 million to the UFC per ppv, so there's very little incentive for the UFC to put together great cards.

UFC 318: Holloway vs Poirier for the BMF "title", really?

Holloway vs Gaethje is virtually the same level of fight and wasn't even co-main at UFC 300, albeit that was a super stacked mega card.

Still...

It's not a real title fight.

I also can't see a real title fight that fell off the card, either.

I haven't paid attention, what's Sherdog's thoughts on this? Furious? Happy? Buying? Not buying?
This is like the 3rd time BMF headlined idk why you’re surprised. I think it’s warranted. The draw is big enough. It has significantly more interest than many title fights rn. BMF mostly means overwhelming fan favorite. I’d rather them do this than shoehorn names for the championship. I don’t like the disrespectful tone you’re taking towards Max and Dustin. I don’t like it one bit.

It’s subjective but has anyone they’ve put in there for it not had the merit? There are a select few that bring the fight, draw the crowd and have the resume. It’s a promotional tool but it makes a ton of sense.

So what does the BMF "belt" add?

Just put Dustin vs Max in a cage and put it in the main event and offer them big money to put on a brutal clinic, right?

Cardboard belts don't really do it for me.
