So Ontario’s free tuition plan lasted less than 3 years

Unsustainable is the word the article used.

Good thing we dont have a bunch of politicians promising similar plans.
 
Interesting that it was for low income families, but was initially for families making up to $175,000 a year. That seems rather high for "low income", unless the standard of living in Ontario is insanely high.

Seems like they didn't plan accordingly with a budget set specifically for this, and with proper limits. Now they are wondering how to pay for it.
 
Or tuition is too high. How do they not plan accordingly or was there a massive amount of low income all of a sudden? There should've been statistics and know how many low income student they expect. I don't understand. This all sounds like a scam. Those tuition grants just turned into loans.
 
Not even free college for all like our American progressive candidates want to try. It wasn't even feasible for only the low income students before it became unsustainable.



Ontario's Progressive Conservative government is eliminating free tuition for students from low-income families while also cutting tuition fees.

The Ontario Student Assistance Plan grants had become unsustainable and it was time to refocus it to provide help to students in the most financial need, said Training, Colleges and Universities Minister Merrilee Fullerton

DidntD we do the same with ACA - 4x the poverty level so like $80k/yr

Somehow other countries worldwide manage to do it, so your tuition seems outrageously high.

Yes. It is the tuition that is the problem. Passing that inflated and bloated tuition cost onto the government rather than the students I do not think will fix things.
 
1 year residence + tuition only (no books etc) is $25k for first year.
 
Teach your son financial management, convince them to pursue a fruitful major or trade and show them that path leads to pain free routes to loan repayment

These Western European countries have tuition or heavily subsidized tuition that the costs per semester is ridiculously low, by American standards. Norway even gives free tuition to foreigners, which seems rather stupid.

Canadians are already absurdly taxed. We are trying to give everything to everyone for free. It doesn't work, especially with an aged population and a policy of only allowing immigrants from the middle east and Africa in any real numbers.

Tons of philipinos and Indians here in Sask.
 
Universities and colleges are already heavily subsidized in almost every province. Just like every other industry that gets into bed with government the prices rise exponentially. Fewer and fewer native born Canadians are enrolling in universities yet the tuition continues to rise. I would have loved to see a program like this work but sadly the outcome was easily predictable.
