That's what sales people do, at least sales people I knew. My father worked in sales as did his friends. That was a common conversation mention with them, different tactics they would use to try and get people to like and trust them. It worked. they were all successful in their sales jobs.

OP sounds like an unreliable witness. We'd need to send an independent sherbro investigator to observe the family dynamics, and report back on what "the problem" is. Usually if people don't like you there's some sort of reason for it that makes sense. I can believe his family doesn't like him, but I don't know that he really understands the reason behind it. There are families that are judgmental and if you don't do certain things like become a [insert high status position], get rich, etc, then you're a pariah. Usually people know that though.

They resent me.

My sisters were wanna-be Diva's in their youth who couldn't pull it off (though they have great and well paid jobs and families).
Their husbands were virgins before they met them, now they're skinny dorks with devastating inferiority complexes.

My father was a poof in another life (though again, respectable, never abusive, always worked etc).

Dude above said it right. I'm stacked, jacked, chicks love me (sometimes love to hate me), I go against their conventional "family value" grain. I'm all about my hair and my muscles and being stacked and the object of many women's sexual desire.

Where are you from? I am detecting some different culture here?? At the end of the day, if it's all about your hair and being jacked, and living responsibility free---some cultures don't respect that. If you act like a douche, NO culture likes that.

People who have a "would be fun to take a beer with" attitude are usually popular though, not the opposite. Have you tried asking them what the problem is? At this point it would be easier to just ask.
