So much for MMA going mainstream

Her fight is going to be like a formality?

she was presented the belt and announced the woman's champion at the press conference, would have been much better to actually let her win it in her upcoming fight yes

I don't think that this fight will have any effect on whether or not MMA goes mainstream, but I agree with everything else in the post. Hendricks deserves the shot.

I think MMA is relatively mainstream already, its just in a niche in america, like hockey or nascar, or pretty much any other sport that isn't football, basketball, or baseball.

3/10

champions have to beat the former title holder in order to earn it. if nick or chael beat the likes of gsp and jones then they are legit champions...

Just another example, and theres been plenty recently, of the UFC trading in credibility and any legitimate claim to being able to compete with real main-stream sports leagues for short-term profit and to be able to protect one of their dominant champs. Also, anyone claiming Nick is getting this fight deservedly is delusional. Losing a close decision to a guy that just got dominated by the champ does not equal 3 top ten wins in row, 2 by way of ko. Hendricks has done more in the past year to claim a title shot than Nick has done his entire career. Nick is a good fighter, but he should earn his shot first. I, for one, will not be viewing that event.

you're actually complaining that a sport you only heard about because of a reality show is entertainment centric.

these 2 bouts are nothing but the most recent in a long list of similar situations. wake up.

They had a MMA reality show in 1993? Who knew!

See there is a difference in the past and present, in the past the UFC did not actually have a full roster and actual contenders, it was forced into a lot of those situations and even until just a few years ago. Now the UFC is at the point where it no longer needs to throw out fake challengers and instead it chooses to continue doing so...while all the while ruining any credibility it has built over the last few years.

I have followed the sport ever since I went to UFC 4 in Tulsa as a little kid. I have watched the sport grow from where it was to what it is now and I want to continue to see it take steps forward, not backwards. You wouldnt know much about that though, I doubt you have ever even seen the inside of a gym let alone ever been to a live event based on your keyboard warrior attitude here.

im sorry if boxing can pull this kinda crap why cant MMA/UFC do it too?

This.

Also your argument that Diaz doesn't deserve the title shot because he lost his last fight is flawed because he did not lose the fight convincingly. A lot of people, this poster included, felt he actually won that fight.

Ye doth whineth too much in thine post.

So unless the guy dies in the cage its not convincing enough? Got it, great logic.

He LOST, someone should at least have to be on some kind of winning streak before getting a title shot UNLESS it is a title fight and there is some controversy.

How is GSP fighting Diaz worse than Jones fighting Sonnen.

Remind me TS, what are Sonnen's recent LHW credentials compared to Diaz' recent WW credentials?

I'm not saying that Diaz should be fighting GSP but with an argument like you used even a valid point gets thrown away.

You may want to re-read my post, Sonnen getting a title shot is almost as laughable as Diaz.

boxing is exactly what MMA does NOT want to be, yet here we are.

Yea but boxing is mainstream, your thread is about MMA going Mainstream. Serious though where else MMA going to pull in ppv numbers and casual fans if they dont do things outside the box once in awhile.

Boo fucking hoo. This is Nick Diaz, one of the baddest mother fuckers on the planet. Hendricks will get his shot. The best guys always do.

I, for one, want to see GSP/Diaz far more than GSP/Hendricks. Who knows, if Diaz pulls off the unlikely and beats GSP, maybe Hendricks will get his shot against Diaz. Then he can take all that pent up frustration out on him.

But Diaz will fuck him up.

UFC usually makes the fight that most people want to see. Diaz has a larger fan base than Hendricks by far, and the trash talking makes the GSP vs Diaz fight more personal and thus more interesting.

As much as the UFC has done to bring the sport to where its at in such a short period of time, its amazing that they now are doing anything they can to shatter any credibility the sport currently has.

What am I talking about? No not a womens fight headlining a PPV, its a risk but with the right fights built behind it I think it will be successful.

No, I am talking about ruining the credibility of what a CHAMPION is. A champion is the best of the best. A champion has put in their dues, put together a solid resume, and fought their way to the top. There are no arguments on said champions because they have earned and fought their way to that title.

Unless of course you fight in the UFC. In the UFC the above does not matter. What matters is your mouth. Not your skill...well unless trash talking is a skill. Winning a fight is not even a requirement, hell go on a losing streak, run your mouth and you will get a title shot over anyone else.

I thought Sonnen getting the most laughable title shot of all-time was bad but nope Uncle Dana had to top himself as usual and now we will get an even more laughable GSP and Diaz fight. Lets reward the guy who not only lost his LAST fight but also who has been suspended for the past year. Lets make the guy who just won an OFFICIAL #1 contender fight by knocking out yet another top 10 WW and has a fucking 5 fight win streak over top talent fight again before he gets the shot.

I know its all about money but where does it end? GSP sells fights regardless, why further run the integrity of the sport for a few extra bucks?

MAKE PEOPLE EARN THEIR FUCKING TITLE SHOTS!!!!

I agree TS, but Dana is giving the "fans" what they want. And Diaz nuthuggery base is huge, just like Sonnen's.

No matter what shit they pull of, if you have enough "fans" to go with it things will be fine for Dana.

If you want to send a meaasage that enough is enough with the bullshit gifted, indeserved ttle shots, then you can watch it but on the Internet so you don't bump their tv ratings.

Making the big name fights that draw casual fans, rather than running the kind of ranking-based meritocracy that hardcore followers espouse, IS what has made MMA mainstream! At the end of the day the UFC is a business, and sometimes more deserving fighters get pushed into the background in favor of ones that can better sell fights. You could argue that boxing has always been this way, and is widely regarded as legitimate - so why is it any more of a problem in MMA?

Why keep hating on boxing? MMA will never be the juggernaut boxing is. Boxing has too much lore and tradition. I understand you are MMA fans but the utter disrespect constantly thrown at boxing shows you don't respect other martial arts, which at best probably makes you a fucking phony. Constantly disrespecting boxing is not getting MMA any closer to where you want it to be.
